Have you ever noticed when you shoot a Muley or a Blacktail in the vitals they tend to drop like a sack of potatoes but the Whitetails seem to run every single time (sometimes for a distance) when they have been mortally hit in the vitals? I couldn't tell you how many times I have drilled WT in the heart (completely severed in at least 2) and they continue to run for 20-30 yrds or more???

Even on the hunting shows the damn things seem to run forever after the shot. I shoot a 180g 30-06, I've shot them with Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, Nosler, Soft Point, etc. all had the same effect. Tore the crap out of the vitals but the dang vermin just don't drop  even the dink buck I shot this year I severed the heart and took out a lung and it still ran 20 yrds

only 2 of the many wt I've taken ever tipped over right on the spot.  Most run 30-50 yards and crash.  Every deer taken from my food plot has dropped in the same spot with in 10'

Shoot them at the base of that big fat neck and they won't run at all.

I can only think of two out of sixty something whitetails that didn't drop in their tracks like a light was switched.

Out of dozens of whitetails that I have shot (vast majority with a bow) Only one had gone more that 35-40 yards and that was my first buck at age 6.  Most have dropped in their tracks or within 10-15 feet.

I'm not saying they are going far, but they always seem to go 10-30 yrds with no blood pumpin  I have killed a few that dropped like Muleys but the vast majority run at least a few yrds, most of the mule deer just drop right in their tracks

Guy that just poached a whitetail buck on my property claims he shot it a half mile away.  I told him it sounds like he needs to work on his shot placement.

Most of my whitetails have dropped in their tracks. I haven't noticed a difference between the sub species and I hunt all three regularly.

Any deer with a arrow through the heart doesn't go far... last wt went 5 steps... most go less then 50 yards which is seconds before they take a dirt nap. .. elk, deer,bear... pattern has been consistent in my experience.

I really think it's a deer by deer basis. My biggest whitetail I dropped him in his tracks with a 180 grain core lokt no run out just a good clean kill. My 2nd biggest ran about 50 yards before dropping and I hit him with a 175 grain nosler partition. And if you've ever shot the partitions you know what kind of wound channel that bullet makes, it's devastating. Other whitetails I've shot are split. Some ran a little ways and some dropped immediately. These are all timber whitetails btw.

Now on the other hand my biggest muley I shot dropped right back in his bed. Mainly because I shot him bedded down lol. But my dad's big muley ran probably 100 yards or more and he had to hit him a 2nd time. So in my opinion all of it is subjective as far as the situation and shot placement and not so much the species!
