Favorite/best otter gland lure

What's your favorite otter gland lure?

 I only use gland lure for otters in late January and February. I have always used Dunlap's and have caught otters in Cage Traps and my Hancock.  Always baited with a freshly caught trout.  I am anxious to hear what others have to say.

 I am sure that any of these will work, if the time is right.

Maybe the gland lure is my problem. These otter seem to be cage shy thinking of apply for a special permit and making a large float with a hole in center and putting 330 underwater below the hole. Anyone have any experience with padded footholds for otter rigged up to a downing cable or snares rigged to a downing cable?

There is a pinch point in between a couple of docks and a couple of latters which suspect is a main way the otters are getting on the docks.

What size footholds if I rigged them on the latter steps also how much weight for the drowning weight and what kind on line angle would I want on the drowning cable

blind sets if u have a small creek close by use more then one cage line them otter travel in groups u will find your best sets this way . if u are doing damage work the number 44 blake lamb or 5 briger put pads on them the pads wont heart u a bit 40 pounds of weight. 280 conibear work very well .

What's your favorite otter gland lure?

Okay I will give away this secrete
   
Take one of the otters you catch and cut its oil sacks
like you do to a beaver oil sacks and squeeze the oil out into a bottle
add some glycerine to it

When using it, use a toothpick and dip it in the bottle
Put "ONLY" 1/2"  "NO MORE"of glad oil on the toothpick. ~ It is load / strong to the nose of an otter
Put that toothpick behind the paddle of the cage trap or behind the foot-hold trap if that is what your using

I learned this years ago from a old otter trapper and probably the best otter trapper in the state of Washington
Back in the 1980's; He use to catch close if not over 100 otter a year.

I do basically as trapper john said. I squeeze the contents of the gland with a little ground castor. Cavens "Timber" makes a good carrier.

My best years I used this and crawfish fish oil at the sets depending how the traps could be positioned. Many years in a row caught over 165 in less than 90 days.

As far as "cage shy" that could be many things. The way the trigger is positioned. Type of trigger. Size of cage. Cage design. Otter like to go through without touching their whiskers, whether a conibear or cage. How the trigger wires are positioned is very important on land sets or exposed sets. Fast runs and a submerged trap, not so important.
