Montana or Idaho

I am continually not drawn in our state and would really like an opportunity at a bull. I do not have any experience out of state. I am wondering what state has a better opportunity for a bull. Idaho or Montana? I would prefer to archery hunt. Also what areas should we focus on hunting. Thanks!

Both have great opportunity, but so does over the counter western Washington

Ken I have hunted the west side a few times and I really don't enjoy it. I prefer the eastside.

I'm 0 for 2 elk hunting in Idaho, haven't tried Montana yet.

Either or.. Can't go wrong with either state (or any state for that matter) that gives you the full rut.

Haven't hunted Idaho but have heard good things. I know its definitely better then here but people shoot elk every year in Washington, just gotta find a spot. Montana on the other hand has even more elk and has plenty of opportunities and a lot of public land. It is a lot more expensive though...like a lot. But is worth it if you have the money

Pick one and put in the time. Oregon can be good too. Montana has a 5 week Archery and 5 week rifle season and you can hunt both with a general tag. Never hunted Idaho but I like the idea of being able to buy a 2nd tag.

One thing to take into consideration when making your decision is bears.  Most otc places in Montana also have Griz.  Something to take into consideration.

I read in the newspaper that Idaho reduced their deer and elk tags in the month of August from $450 down to $300 for nonresident elk and deer was also reduced pretty good..I believe they are going to do it again next year as well.  My friend had a rough year this year in Montana.  He believes it's the wolves.... and he has harvested many bulls over the years.  He use to do pretty good up the CDA River.

They reduced the cost of your SECOND tag by 100 bucks if you bought it before September 1st.  No discount on your original tag
