1.5-5 Weaver TR1 Nitrex and a 3-9 TR1 Nitrex and I love em.  The small one is on an AR w/collapsible stock that I put together for my kids, the larger one is on an R15 that I use for coyotes and it has range hashmarks for range.  Both scopes work very, very well.

From the ones ive shot. Bushnell 1-4 with bad lever cor a carbine or a nikon 4-12 coyote special for a longer barrel. Both very reasonable bot have built in drop marks for the 223

What are you going to use it for?
Personally, I have a Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x varmint scope.
It's nearly as big as the upper.
I have a varmint upper and the 20x helps me shoot tiny little groups.
.223 holes at 200yds bunched together are barely visible.

Cabelas has the p-223 series marked down in the bargain cave.  I have a Monarch and it is a good scope but don't know a thing about the p series.  Maybe someone can chime in on the p-223 series who has first hand knowledge

I was sold on the p 223 because of the price point. Straight. 3 power with bdc and mounts for $ 150 on sale, couldn't pass it up. Never wanted optics on my ar but now its a no brainer. Dial in range and its a done deal. Bore sighted one day a few years ago and got it out this fourth of July for tannerite and it was perfect at 100 yds.

Redfield makes a red dot/laser optic selling at Cabelas right now called the counterstrike on sale for $119.00 (reg 179.00). Looks fun. Better quality would be an ACOG or EOtech but you said not to break the bank

The smaller the target the more scope you need, my 222 Rem is for shooting off the bench at the range and controlling P-dogs in my daughters pastures(CO), it wears an 8-32x or 6.5-20x.  All my coyote guns are very flat shooting, 22-204, 5.6x50R Mag and 22-250 with light bullets all shoot flat enough to hold on fur to 300 yards and coyotes are pretty good sized targets so I have no need for trick reticles or turrets,  These guns wear 1.5-6x with plain duplex or Ger. #4's the way I hunt I tend to get more 10 yard shots than 300 with most under 100 yards.  When I'm hunting down in heavy cover I carry combination guns rifle/shotgun these wear 1-4x with their huge FOV work well with both the rifle side and the shotgun for really close work and moving critters, the 4x on the top end  lets me go to 300 yards with little handicap.

With your just range work and plinking a nice 4-12x or 4-16x would work well,  if your planing to use heavies at longer ranges I'd look into something with hash marks or turrets.  If you include hunting a 2.5-10x or 2.5-16x might be advantages.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

I like the EOTech for 50 yards or less. Great for end of the world stuff IMHO.
