Open vs. Timber
« on: December 23, 2015, 09:20:23 PM »
New to duck hunting so this might be a stupid question. Was gonna order a phelps call the other day and noticed that there was an option for open/double or timber/double. What is the difference?

Range mostly. An 'open water' call is usually very loud and good for big water, windy or rainy days when it's hard to get a duck's attention. Most 'timber' calls are for close quarters calling which is most of anyone's calling. Close birds and smaller areas. You usually call less in smaller situations also.

Open call is going to be louder with the same air pressure vs timber. It's designed to carry sound over longer distance. Timber calls tend to be raspy and more ducky on the low end for close in calling. Opens can be used in close too so dont let that be what makes up your mind.  Both calls are doubles so the reed set up us similar.  Check YouTube sound bites and that might give you a hand.

I think you'll prefer the timber call most of the time. Unless you only hunt big water trafficking birds.
