Waterproofing spray for wool hat?
« on: December 28, 2015, 05:15:25 PM »
I searched the forum a little bit and couldn't quite find what I was looking for. I received this 100% wool, crushable hat for Christmas that I had wanted for quite some time. What would be the best thing to treat it with? I know I wont find anything that will make it actually waterproof but I want to protect it the best I can. Anyone have any good experiences or tips for sprays or anything for it?

Does the manufacturer give instructions?  :dunno:

This stuff is awesome! Holds up a long time and works great. I let the first layer dry, then put a second layer on and call it good water beads off. I put it on my LOWA TIBET GTX HI and those are $$. No negative effects

First of all, that is a schwanky hat! Do tell where one may purchase such a gem. I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but soaking wet it will still insulate but probably feel heavy. I've only experimented with Scotch-Guard spray on rain coats and fletching and I can tell you it doesn't last forever.

Pete, if I were in your place, I would look for ScotchGuard (if you can still find it).

I hunt with woolen felt hats like that, but I don't treat them.  Anything that is waterproof on the outside will not let sweat go through from the inside.  Wool is fairly good at repelling water anyway, just use the hat like it is.  The nice thing about crushable hats is this: If they get wet, just ring them out and move on.

Pope, I got it for Christmas from my folks, I had it on my Amazon list. Here is the link to it

I got the green one, the chicks dig it

no seriously it beads up water great, had it in a snow storm and rooting around under a snow covered pine tree and loved it.  The pine needles and snow didn't fall down my back side and I could crush one side of the hat keeping the pine needles from poking my ear and cheeks.  It would have sucked without the hat.

I've got no conclusive evidence but I'll say this, beware of silicone sprays on organic materials (wool, leather etc.)
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Pete, I have that same hat. Been wearing it for 25 years and I've never applied anything to it and it is still as good as new. I'd say you don't need to spray it with anything; it sheds water really well.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I will just roll with it as is. I forgot the reason I wanted it in the first place was because of the qualities like that, shedding water and being a crushable.
