(For the record, I'm not sure why this is a surprise. There are a lot more of them and they are the number 1 killer of cows nationally)

So its a surprise that coyotes kill lots of fawns?

What these mental giants seem to gloss over is that we have added another apex predator. The population didnt dropp due to coyotes, & many states have a shoot on site rule for coyotes some dont require a lic.

I guess. If you want a gross simplification of it. This is more about the quantity of deer they eat. Not if they eat deer.

We all know yotes are hard on deer!

But, here's the qualifier to this story:

“We went into an area not as heavily used by wolves,” he said. “As we shift study sites into areas with more wolves there will be more wolf mortality. Coyotes won’t be as effective in those areas because wolves will outright exclude coyotes on the kill.”
