Why do I keep gettin busted
« on: January 27, 2009, 10:03:39 PM »
Last several times out,( and I try to hunt daily) the coyotes have been giving their warning bark from up wind. Some have been close but only in the trees where I can't see them. In open country they are out 700yds plus. I set up with my back to a tree or a rock and face down wind. I'm clearly getting better at calling because I've been getting alot more action than before but I just can't seem to seal the deal. I got 1 yote this year because it was a wounded pup who didn't run from the truck ( and yes I did get it legally ). Am I facing the wrong direction? Any suggestions?

How are you approaching your set? Try to be as inconspicuous as possible. I've been in that situation myself and always figured that they saw me coming in.

I try to sneek in as quiet as possible but I know I'm still pretty loud. I spend the first 5 min getting set up and range finding. Then I sit still for 15 and start calling. To set up I get my calls out and put an old flannel shirt down for a pad.

Im definitely not an expert but I only started having luck when I got away from howls and rabbit sounds.  I also added a decoy and I know that helped with the bobcat I called in.  If your wind is good and you are hidden and still, I would say it is the sound.  Volume, intensity, ect.
