Drilled a bunch of extra holes in the air intake  box to allow more airflow and installed a K&N air filter.

I purchased a bully dog tuner for my old 01 LBZ. Put the 100 extra horse tune in it disable the speed governor.  Did an early am run across Hanford on my to Othello. Holy cow 60 to over 100 was spooky fast.

What year and make? On my 03 dodge I put a turbo back 5in exhaust. I cant ever get it to blow smoke now. The flow through muffler is a little loud at 2k rpm which is fine because i try to cruse at 1800...   I have 19.5 steel dually wheels and run commercial graded tires It made my tires just big enough to drop my rpms that 2-300 or so doing 68 so i can get max fuel mileage. On my 03 i run 8R 19.5 on my 05 I run 245/75R19.5, best part is you can purchase real retreads for around $125 beats buying new.  Im going to be buying a 5in exhaust kit for my 05 here soon.

If you're talking about "The deletes" I've had absolutely no issues on my Ram.  Runs like a whole different truck in a good way.

I have a Duramax and a TDI.
Never thought about any mods until my TDI recently diagnosed with a DPF that needs to be replaced for a small fee of $2400.
I can get the entire straight pipe exhaust with the Malone mod for about the same price as the fix and get higher performance without any future exhaust problems.

Know a guy really happy with the Green Diesel chip on the Ram 1500.  Better mileage, power, compression braking added to cruise control, and eliminates most problems with the DEF system - including the dreaded "won't start in 200 miles" problem.  Really pricey but worth it if you are taking remote trips.  Twice had that message pop up due to wet connectors.

You should've mentioned that you wanted the city slicker mod suggestions. Remove muffler, weld in straight pipe, put some 37" tires on 24's and you're good to go. Oh, maybe some window tint and some realtree stickers.

DPF = diesel particulate filter ... aka-junk.  I have a 2007.5 duramax. Efi live, diamond eye turbo back exhaust(no dpf), egr block off plate. Great thing is that starting in 2007 the diesel trucks never need emissions in King county.  Mod away!

EFI is a custom set of tunes  to your truck. You can have many programs and a switch to change between them.  The best way to go on most trucks capable to run it.  My 05 Ram has a custom cold air intake which is basically a 4" ABS pipe in bottom of air intake and running towards ground under bumper to allow more cool air.  An Edge juice CTS.  Full electronic gauges and tunes up to aprox. 160hp.  Also a MP-8 which increases rail pressure for added hp but mostly low end grunt when towing. Lost kitty kat in exhaust somewhere? A bd overdrive lockout module to control od in auto trans.  A mystery switch which allows me to lock torque converter.  Some trans uprades.  Which will not last.  New built trans is on the list.  A custom Tater turbo 62-65-12 with billet wheel.  6" lift.  Steering brace.  Rhino bars.  Backup camera.  Custom leather.  Big wheels n tires.  Etc.  Truck is fast and strong and gets great mpg.  Too much power for trans currently and I don't run it tuned up on high hp programs much.  Will pull anything over pass as fast as you dare.  Loaded heavy pulling 27ft TT up hill I can pass cars up blewitt at 70mph if I chose.  But I don't, (Just once). Really my advice for diesels is good tuning like EFI and delete as much emission crap as you can.  Endless upgrades out there just do your homework.  Many are easy to do.  Anything emission is just crap from Gov. EPA regs.  You can have improved mpg, HP, and not smoke out the world.  Worst I got towing was around 12mpg but average 12-14.  I can get close to 20mpg hiway and around 16-18 running around.
MAGA!  Again..

EFI can be a tune for your specific truck. They look at all the perimeters in your ecm and fine tune for optimal performance. You can get a single tune. A 2 setting tune or a 5 setting tune. Theres a lot that can be done with EFI. You can even buy a pre programmed ecm with tunes that will increase the performance of your truck. But wont be specifically designed for it.

Do a quick search and you will find a ton of info. EFI is by far the best, safest way to tune your truck.

1 thing to remember, your Allison tranny needs to learn these tunes. So if you go from optimized stock to a 120 hp tune you can limp your tranny. Its best to take it easy for a couple days and let your tranny adapt to the tune.

Rob Coddgins, Idaho Rob is a better known tuner. With a great reputation! He can explain it all to you a lot better than I can.

You bet.  I think you would love EFI tuning.  Warranty always an issue but if its expired any deletes are great.  Check into diesel shops over dealers in that case.  Most the time a custom tune is way better than stock tuning in all aspects.  Everyone should do it. I have box edge tunes which are inferior to custom beta efi types.  New system is finally out for Dodge 05-03 which allows full custom tuning like efi.  Someday!  Yes Idaho Rob is a name I read about often.  Highly praised in tuning.

On the duramax forums I frequent he is 1 of the most highly regarded tuners available. You don't have to go there for a tune. There are several options. Including local shops that install his tunes.

Put an Airaid intake kit and Edge products tuner on my 04 shortly after I bought it new.  The tuner is fully adjustable while driving down the road which, I think, is pretty common for most aftermarket tuners but nonetheless is a nice feature.  It's still going strong and haven't had any problems with it.  They sure do make a world of difference when you crank it up and stand on the loud pedal though.

Its pretty amazing how much power you can get out of a cummins motor and how detuned they are emissions and such. Reality is that even stock they can do pretty hard work, and bumped up even slightly provides noticeable gains.

That is a STOUT engine.. A clutch eater!  I haven't dynoed and probably wont but with stock fuel 550 is probably as much as I could get.  Towing I guess about 425hp/800-900tq maybe less?  With your turbos I bet your pulling hard over 500hp and staying cool.  Sweet..  Diesels are really the only way for work trucks.  Aint seen a gasser yet hold a candle to a good diesel. I do know I can eat up a new Ram cummins manual.  Are they detuned because it wasn't even close and I was heavier.  EPA crap.

I have a 04 duramax. Running cold air intake, 50hp over stock injectors, banks monster exhaust, fass lift pump and a edge tuner. I really do not like the edge tuner. I swear it works sometimes and other times it does not. I will upgrade to efi at some point.

I average 21mpg on the highway.

I'm thinking about a mod and upgrade exhaust with deletes for my tdi.
I heard the Malone stage 2 with a rawtek exhaust is the way to go with these small diesels.
Anyone with knowledge or experience in these small diesel mods?
My duramax is not being used much but I may consider it if I'm happy with my first mod.

2001 Dodge 6spd.

Mack 6+ Injectors

FASS 150 HPFP
SO VP44

Extrude honed head
F1 Diesel Helix II cam
Enterprise Engine valve crossheads
Exhaust valves in the intakes
Unshrouded Intake valves
Top Hat style valve stem seals
BD Intercooler
+.020" ISB 275 Pistons

Sequential turbos, Holset HX40 over Garrett GT42, ~ 55-60 PSI of boost full tilt boogie...and makes ~ 630 RWHP...proven on the English Racing Dyno.
EPA crap.

yeah, it's a lot of fun...and things happen REAL fast!!
