What is your elk call setup.
« on: February 27, 2016, 07:41:33 PM »
I just ordered a bunch of new calls (kit 7) from Elknut and can't wait for them to get here.

In the past I have only used the primos cow girl, a random hand me down blue reed bugle, and couldn't get comfortable with diaphram reeds, most likely from lack of practice.  This year I decided I'm going to learn to talk to the elk. So it sparked my question, what calls are your favorites? What ones are you not do find of?

Most calls are capable, the only ones I really didn't like was the Mac Daddy and point blank calls don't fit me right.

Rocky Mountain All Star has worked well for me. I had trouble keeping air from going over the top of the call with some of the flatter profile calls. The plastic top really helped me.

The easier question for me to answer would be what do I not have in the arsenal :chuckle:  Phelps, primos, Bugling Bulls, sceery, Berry, the list is endless.  Every summer I order half a dozen or so diaphrams, some new, some tried and true.  Always enjoy running new calls through the paces.

The two calls you will receive are the Mellow Yellow & the Mistress, they are world class calls, I also use those two on my elk hunts. The Mellow Yellow is great for very soft or louder cow calling, the Mistress is the best All Purpose call I've ever used, it's range is phenomenal. It's great for all sounds elk produce, cow or bull. Just put in your need practice & you'll do just fine.

Have you used mouth reeds in the past? Thanks!

I have used a lot of different calls, my favorite cow calls  are the carlton calls, I find with bugles it isn't as important witch one. I have called in tons of bulls with the primos bugles. but cow calls all have a little different sound. when you get your arsenal put together figure out witch one is the easiest for you to make the quality elk talk. so when your shaking like a virgin on prom night, and your hearts racing, trying to close that last little bit of distance you will still be able to make that quality sound.

I used the Wayne Carltons cow in estrus whine last year and I had the Bulls going crazy. So far that's the golden call for me

I have not used mouth reeds at all in the woods in the past. I have a set of 5 from primos but I'm to scared to try them outside my house because sometimes I get them to make god awful screeches. I played with there white one the most and can do an ok bugle but can't do any realistic cow sounds.

I am however excited to try and learn them. Wayched a bunch of YouTube videos and will be practicing a lot before the season.

Bully bull grunt tube and a raging bull diaphragm for bugling. I use a mellow yellow, who's yrr daddy, and a hoochie momma for cow calls. I use the bugle the most though.

Most of the time I have either "The Boss" or "Dragon Slayer" in my mouth. This year we released two new calls...The Beast and the redesigned tag Notcher that are showing a ton of promise.

I always have an EZEstrus around my neck and a Phelps Locate-A-Bull tube in my hand.

We have some new diaphragm frames in the works that we hope to have available by May of 2016.

I know it's the carpenter and not the hammer but...
Tony used the EZEstrus and Herd Wrecker diaphragm to call in the new State Record Roosevelt

Jacob and Josh used the EZEstrus to lure in the new state record  Cascade Roosevelt this past season.

These Phelps calls do the job! I have had more encounters with bulls the last 3 seasons using them, then ever, and a couple dead ones on the ground.

I only use Phelps Game Calls reeds and eze estrus along with Phelps tube . All phelps calls for me . Phelps has been working his ass off the past few years getting his reeds dialed . Every year he has improved on his reeds and IMO they are right there with the Giants of the elk call industry. My favorites are the signature cow , dragon slayer, boss and the beast .

Here's another to some Phelps custom diaphragms this past year.  I have used Bugling Bull Game Calls for years.  After telling Jason what I was after this year, he whipped up some custom calls and they were some of the best I've used.

Bugling Bulls brown and yellow.  Bully bull tube.  Been wanting to try the new elknut tube.

Yup.  Exactly what I run.  I also like the Estrous excited ( orange ) reed from bugling bull.  The only bite and blow I run is the Bugling bulls  one.  Not even sure of the name anymore as I have had it for years but it is green and black.

I have tried many many calls and these are what works for me personally.

As an update, I have been practicing my calling every few days and am a lot more comfortable with mouth reeds.  My favorite mouth reed that I currently have is "The Mistress" by bugling bull, picket this up through elknut's store. The fit of this reed in my mouth is comfortable compared to a lot of the other reeds that I have been trying. The sound is also awesome and I have been learning a lot about how to control the sounds.

I also ordered a set of 3 custom EZ-Estrus calls from Jason Phelps. They are 100% pieces of art. I have not had the opportunity to try one yet because I purchased them for an event in late May. After that I will post some pictures.

Wetwood, as you can tell by all the posts here. Multiple calls, all with successful results. I would suggest trying multiple types of calls as everyone mouth shape is different.one call may not work as well as another for you.there are also different frame sizes to fit mouth shapes and sizes. Take your time and be patient. Ask questions of Jason (Phelps) and Paul (Elknut). They are very nice and know their stuff.

Then, practice, practice, practice.....

Good luck
