Chugach or Yukon? Which kuiu jacket to buy?
« on: March 03, 2016, 09:47:43 AM »
Was hoping to get some input on just these two rain jackets from kuiu.  The biggest difference I can see is the weight, Yukon has gasket type sleeve ends and a number that I don't understand?  The chug has 161 g/m2 and the Yukon has 256 g/m2, any one know what that means?  The Yukon weighs 29.2 oz and the chug weighs 18.9.  I see the Yukon is 15% off till the 9th but I'm not in a hurry, any owners on here have any input?  Also getting the pants, thanks.

I should add, I'm not a multi day 10 mile in backcountry hiker, but if I had to or had the chance, I would.  Most of my overnight backcountry hunts or hikes are probably within 4 or 5 miles.

I am not sure what those numbers mean.  But my brother and I both own the Yukon Gear.  It is worth every penny, I'd take advantage of the 15%.

I hear the Chugach is durable, but I have no personal experience. I do know that its a thinner fabric.

I have a Yukon jacket, and its awesome. I've been in and out of sticker bushes and thick brush with it with no rips or issues. In fact, my first day out with it I ended up going through some really thick crap... lots of Devils club and other stuff... it was the only way back to the truck from where I was so I trucked through it and when I got back I was thinking oh man, theres GOTTA be a rip or something in this... looked it over and nothing... good as new.

Do you guys have the Yukon pants as well?  I'm a short legged guy, 30" inseam and the sizes come small, medium and large not 32,34,36 ect.  What size would fit me the best being 5'7" ? Thanks

I wear a large in the Yukon pants. I wear 34" waist with 30" inseam. They are a touch big but I'd rather have them be a touch big then small I am able to tighten them with the belt to work for me. I believe all the pants have the same inseam but not positive on that. I would also say the Yukon is worth the money and they seem to be very durable. Went through tons of thick brush these last two seasons and haven't tore them once over here in southwest Washington. Not the quietest gear but from what I have heard the chuguch is louder then the Yukon line.

I'm really impressed with all the reports so far, pm's included.  Sounds like Yukon kicks serious behind.

I like my rain gear to be a shell only so I went with Chugach and really like it. I've hunted it a lot including on a fall Alaska moose hunt that was very wet, good stuff

I am a 32" waist and 30" inseam and wear the mediums.
They fit well without being baggy.

From what I could tell it's quieter than some of the cheaper Sitka stuff, but to call it quiet would be a stretch. It's definitely not "wear all day regardless of weather" gear... But when you have rain to cover your sound...

I love my Yukon jacket and pants.  I have XL in both and I'm 6'1" and 220 lbs.  I have enough room in them to layer undergarments, etc. under them.  I took it on my Dall sheep hunt in Alaska and wore them for 6 days straight, with rain every day.  They kept me dry with appropriate insulating layers below.  They do get saturated at some point and feel cold/damp inside but water really doesn't come through.  With appropriate inside layers even in a multi day rainstorm you'll stay dry.

Same experience as popshawn when it rains hard all day they do get to that saturated point and feel some dampness but they did not "leak" through like some of the other outer layers I have tried. I have no experience with the Sitka gear in the price range to compare but was really happy with them. I use them in modern elk season down in sw wa and being out all day in a few hard downpours I was comfortable without being to warm from the moisture staying inside the gear. First day out in a downpour I kept my phone in my breast pocket to see how the gear repelled water and the only dampness was from my moisture on the inside of the jacket rather then outside moisture. I also have short stocky legs with a 34" waist and the fabric with its stretching qualities was very comfortable to hike in when some of the other materials cut into my legs a little bit which was a plus.

Thanks to Wamuledeer for letting me try on his Yukon jacket and pants, I'm sold.  I do wish they had choices on length of inseams but it's not that big a deal.  I love the solid brown color but it looks too much like an elk color for hunting, vias is my next choice.  Thanks for all the info guy, helps a ton.  On a different note, do any of you guys have kuiu's roll top dry bags?  I was wanting a small one for my phone but they don't have the dimensions of the bags.  Will the extra small hold a phone?  And do you know the dimensions of the XL bag?  Thanks again
