I've only taken 2 turkey's, but have only hunted 2 seasons.  I mounted both the fans and beards.  Did the mounts myself so they are pro quality.

Taxidermied one.  Made some into fly tying materials, tossed the others

My first attempt the fan wasn't spread out all the way.  My second was much better.  I think I let it dry longer.  The secondary tail feathers aren't quite aligned, but it still looks good.  Get some compliments from some of the guys here at work.  I used regular old salt.  Does the Borax dry them out faster?

I've mounted a few of my fans w/ the beard.  I've kept all my beards and spurs but stopped keeping fans... don't have space for em :)

I lay mine out on a large piece of cardboard or plywood. Then take nail or pins and spread out the fan to the desired shape and insert a few backup pins and nails to make sure it stays. I have salted all mine with lots of salt in the fleshy area. Borax will work fine as well.

I suck the fat out and chew the meat off then put the borax on... :chuckle:   Spreadem and letem dry.  Borax is great.  If you got a fatty use a little acetone to wipe it off.  Borax usually takes care of it.

i have 3 mounted 1 full strutt and 2 breast mounts. 3 fan mounts and the rest i made a real nice beard board. and have them on that. the fan mounts i did myself. i pinned them out on a large piece of cardboard  and used borax  to dry the meat that was left on the tail after cutting off.

Well, I had a few of my tail feather mounts with the beards attatched to them. They were real nice looking.
When I moved up from Cali, I had left them with my hunting buddy because he had the room in his storage.
You know where this going right ?

Well, a short time later he was out getting the things that I had left with him so that we could meet up and make the exchange.  He called me and said the rats had completely eaten my mounts !!   I was a bit upset...

So, now I have to start all over again.
