They're loud to those in the near vicinity...

That they are! But that is usually only a concern at the range.  I have never been a fan of them but I have never used them.  Only been next to them at the range.

You make some good points for using one, JoshT.

i have a break on a 300win mag (boss actually) and it does not seem louder at all to me when shooting. one good thing about it, when hunting my buddies always know when it was me who did the shootin.... so they start heading over to help right away.

as far as others at the range, he who does not wear ear protection at the range these days....

I'm pretty sure every range requires hearing protection. The other guys weren't bothered by it...they were just laughing.

I've noticed that the radial style breaks (several holes drilled 360*... like the BOSS) seem a lot louder than the baffle style breaks (large ports, usually only on the sides and top). I couldn't tell you why... it just sounds that way.

Also, the noise down-range is greatly reduced with a break. I noticed this when my buddy took a shot at a coyote (with another rifle that's exactly like antlersheds... hmmm... maybe I gave ol'antlershed a few too many suggestions on long-range hunting rifles?), I was to the right about 100 yards... and downrange about 50 yards... I barely heard the shot, and never would have been able to locate the shooter without already knowing where he was. I don't think that makes any difference to the shooter... but it could be good if a follow-up shot is required... or there's multiple bogies inbound.

I have one now in 7MM STW, and had one in 300WM previously.  Both are .5 rifles with their favorite reloads.

I was just shooting factory 180's yesterday. Hopefully in a couple months I will be ready to reload some rounds for it.

I got the scope dialed in two weekends ago, but then I made the mistake of stopping to look at rifles/scopes with Jeremiah on our way home from fishing this past weekend. After seeing how much Bob's had the 4.5-14x50 going for, I returned my Zeiss to cabelas and made them price match bob's. So, now the Sendero is sporting the 4.5-14x50 Conquest with turrets, and I only had to fork out an additional $50. Now it really looks like a mini spotting scope. Now I just need to get all my ranges figured out and make up a little cheat sheet. :IBCOOL:

Would love to head over that way and shoot some yotes. I was in your neck of the woods about a month ago. Stopped in, but didn't see you working.

How do you guys hunt with those brakes on?  They seem so damned loud, I can imagine that you are deafened in the field after your shot?  I would rather take the recoil from my RUM than get field deafend for a while...  :dunno:

ICEMAN,

I like my hearing and the accubrake on my weatherby is loud.  I use QB2's in the field.  They are quick to the ears and great for muffling the sound when shooting any rifle, brake or no brake.  Hearing is too important.

Gotta agree with Ice here too.  I had a 300 Win Mag with a brake on it, and it shot just fine at the range... but in the field...?
my hearing is already shot from too many years in the Army not wearing earplugs 'cause I thought being a team/squad/platoon  sergeant I always had to hear what was going on...
I sold the gun.

Was that group all at 25 yards?  If so here is one thing I have not seen mentioned.  Remember each click at 25 yards only moves the 1/16".  You would need to move the scope 16 clicks to get the group to move one inch at 15 yards, so not terribly surprising that you were not noticing the group much as you've described.  Your group appeared to be off by as much as 4" which would require the scope to be moved 64 clicks to the left to bring it to dead nuts on the bullseye at 25 yards.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
