Cabelas Oufitter tent or Canvas?

I have been researching different kinds of Canvas tents: Rainer...Montana Canvas...etc. Here is what I am looking for: We will be using it from September into NOV In most years. I want something some what on the lighter side, and that I can put up by myself. I want to be able to move camp in a short period of time. I have been looking at the Cabelas Big Horn. It seems that people like them but the material somewhat concerns me. I have read a lot of the threads from the past but not on the Big Horn Three. My budget is 1k to 2k. Thoughts?

For up to 2K I'd buy a used one of each and try them out. Then sell the one you don't like.

With that budget and if being able to erect camp solo is a huge deal, id look at Kodiak canvas.

Davis Tents!  Go ahead and buy a good canvas tent that will last a long long time.  I have a 14x16 that I can put up by myself in under 30 mins. 

For that kind of money you want Quality..

I made that choice 5 years ago and never looked back

I'm on year 21 with a Relite tent from Montana Canvas.  It gets used every year and has a wood stove in it that runs nightly in elk camp.  It's a little dirty but still in great shape.  I have a canvas tent from them too that I've had longer than that one.  Dirty as well now but in perfect shape.  I've never had to make a single repair except for patching a hole a mouse made.  Riley wood stoves in both too.  The bigger stove is getting a warp in the inner floor now but still works fine.  It's double layered on the bottom.

Have u looked into kodiak canvas? I just got the 10x14 flex bow and can put it up by myself in about ten minutes. Tear down just about the same.

It isn't light by any means. But a very solid tent. Waterproof. No need for tarps. Reasonable prices. Check them out at competitive edge.com is where i got mine.

It may not be the size you're looking for. But the 10x14 will do at least 3 pretty comfortably.

Thanks to everyone for the information I looked at all the options...I ended up buying a Montana canvas 12x14 with 12oz duck cotton...with the frame. I got it off craigslist from a guy who won it at the RMEF banquet...brand new!! I think this will be a great option...again thanks for steering me in the right direction😃

We run the Bighorn III and love it.  The fabric is really, really tough.  I bet it is actually tougher than canvas.  We bought the roof protector and a stove and couldn't be happier.  I can carry and set it up myself, something canvas can't touch.  It also stores in a reasonable amount of space and you don't have to worry about mold or mildew.  Cabelas has a great return policy if you run into trouble.  PM me if you have any questions.

 I have had a Montana canvas for 12 years. It is a 12x14 and I also have the 10' porch add on. I can set up the tent in about 30 minutes and then it depends on the ground as to how long it takes to drive stakes.

I picked up a 12x14 montana canvas wall tent...the guy never used it at all..he won it at a RMEF Banquet dinner...pretty excited to use it. I am now reading up on the stoves...Thanks to everyone for the info.

We use a portable garage type for elk camp in November. It's basically a cooking and sitting around the camp type when it's raining but we put a Big Buddy heater in there when we had a couple of friends show up and they slept in it on cots. It works well and is more durable than I thought it would be as we're on our 4th year now. I really like the fact that it doesn't have to be completely air dried like a canvas tent. I can wipe it down a fold it up and it's good to go for the next year.

Reviving an older topic...

Does anyone use one of the portable garage type of tents for hunting camp.  I'm looking at setting up a couple of sites this year.  One will be my camper and tent setup, standard ever year.  I was thinking about getting a couple of the Tractor supply 12x20 steel framed garage tents with the side door to use as a less expensive alternative for the second site.  Maybe pallet the floors.  they will be up most of the fall until JAN or FEB.  How well do these things take the weather, snow shouldn't be much of a problem.

We have used a Costco Canopy for 20 years. For cook shack & rec hall. We adjust the length based on the number of oaks in camp. We put a stove jack in the end.
