log splitter choice
« on: June 18, 2016, 01:28:57 PM »
Hi all, I use about 5 cords of wood a year and recently my 27 ton home depot special log splitter was stolen.I would like to replace it with a faster one, or one that cuts both ways, or a 4 way splitter head, just looking for some different opinions.  Thank you

It's only been a few months but so far my dad has liked his 27ton county line with Honda motor. I believe you can get a 4 way head for it. I think they are at dels for around $1500

I bought a DR. Mower 22 ton splitter and I'm not impressed. When it's working it's nice. In two seasons of splitting 4-5 cords here is the breakdown. Season 1: 3rd tank of gas- float got stuck- 3 weeks later all the fuel drained into the crank case. Not covered under warranty $150. Hydraulic line and swivel pin vibrated off. Cost, another gallon of hydraulic fluid. Season 2: One week ago. Work party at the cabin. O ring on hydraulic line burst, spayed Bro in law. Another gal of fluid and a run into town for O ring. Pull handle cord broke. Submitted a bad review on their web site and it didn't get posted. No response  from customer service either. The splitter is stored under cover and fuel drained when not in use, so it's not weather issues.

Tagging.

Iron and Oak log splitter made by Brave, 27 ton.
I bought a used one from United rentals that had lots of hours on it,but was in good shape. There was nothing that log splitter would not split, nothing. The Honda engine would always start on the first or second pole.
Owned it for 5 seasons and never did anything but change the oil and spark plugs.

I would think a centrifical force splitter will be the only thing faster. And may not split everything.

If you have a tractor with a three point attachment, brim tractor sells one that mounts to it, then you just hook it up to the tractor hydraulic system for vertical or horizontal splitting.
