Trail Cams

I have never used trail cams before and after drawing this Teanaway tag, I have considered purchasing a couple.  My question is; is it worth the money, how do you prevent it from getting stolen, and what would you recommend that won't break the bank.

No problem. There are tons of options and they can be confusing. Lots of good info in those threads. I personally run the bushnell trophy in a bear box and like them.

I like my browning recon force cams the most. Second to those I run bushnell trophy cams. I've had good luck with Primos truth cams also.

I'd buy quanity over quality. More eyes in the woods in more places  is more valuable to me than amazing pictures. (Tho the quality some of them super high end 400$ reconyx cams are awesome). But the cheaper ones are pretty dang good too.

But most cameras at or around the 100$ mark will do great. Good detection and IR flash.

I'd highly recommend a bone view card reader. Plugs right in to your iPhone or android. No need to pack a laptop/camera/tablet. Honestly best investment I've made to help my trail camera experience better.

Worth the money?  Depends on what your buying.  I try to stick to $100 or less per camera.  Mostly because I put them on public land ... and want to be slightly less pissed if they get stolen.  Im also not using them to frame pictures on my wall, but to just see what is there and when.  So spending the money for ultra high quality photos isnt worth it to me.  You can do all the cables and boxes to help prevent them from getting stolen, but if they want it, that does little to hinder them.  I dont set them in any high traffic areas.  I just use them in in my deeper in spots.  Even then I try to go put them in a minimum of a few hundred feet off any trail or FR.  I have a few of the cheaper Moultrie models ... I think all the models have changed since I purchased them.  Havent had any problems with them ...

Buy a can lock box for each one and screw it to the tree.   If you don't better put it 10' high or bears will terrorize it.

You can get some wildgame innovations at Dick's sporting goods for $49.  Can't really beat that deal. 

I picked up three more last week for $39 each when they had a flash sale.

Ive never had any issue with bears screwing with my cameras.  Lots of bear sign in the area but never got one on camera though.  Id stay away from eating food and then touching your trail cam.  The one guy I know who has had issue was eating jerky right before he put his out.  The bear was all over the camera ...

Huh...   I guess different bears.  I have tried rubber gloves, scent killer spray, etc... and nothing has worked.  Also had a stupid cow elk break a camera off it's strap.  Haven't had a single problem now that I have a lock box.  Different strokes for different folks
