Red rock crabs!
« on: July 08, 2016, 04:11:05 PM »
Anyone have any leads on where to pull up a few red rock crabs this weekend in the Everett area.  I've not found very many in the past and like to eat them.

  Thanks, Mike.

I love red rock crabs!

Buddies and I caught a bunch of them in 30' (or less) of water in the rocks near kelp beds.  Mostly in the inlets and tips of small islands.

feast on!

We used to catch a few mixed in with the dungies in 8-2, but the last couple years I don't think we've kept even one.  We got about 80 dungies last weekend with 60 of them keepers and only one small red rock.  The best red rock crabbing we ever saw was along the east side of Whidbey, a mile or a little better north of the ferry dock.  Just north of where the houses end.  That was 5 years ago though.  I don't target them specifically.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

If my boat motor was working, I'd go catch you 2 dozen tomorrow and trade you for the dungies you can get up there.

maybe I'm weird but I really liked the red rocks, probably as well as I liked the dungys which we also caught.

Or maybe I'm so used to old freezer crab it was all awesome  :chuckle:

Not very often this east sider ventures beyond the cascade crest

To me the meat is just a touch sweeter. There just isn't enough!

Snagged several yesterday 50-100 yards off the breakwater at Shilshole. Nice ones, too.
I need just one more hunt and I'll be satisfied ... Really! Just one more...

Rockies have real tasty claws, very sweet compared to Dungies.  Hard to get open you pretty much need hammer or pliers.  There's a reason they call them rock crabs  :)  I'm not really sure how to target them though, they just show up in pots every now and then.

Happy crabbing!  :EAT:

Not sure what boat you have or how far you can travel, Brown's Bay a couple miles south of the Mukilteo boat launch is loaded with them.
