Westport sea bass?
« on: July 12, 2016, 10:31:46 AM »
Hey all, I'm heading to Westport Thursday for a guided fishing trip on Friday. I was wondering if I could catch sea bass off the jetty from shore? Is it possible? I've never been there, so any information is great. Thanks

You can catch fish off the Jetty or serf perch off the beach. use sand shrimp, or rubber worms (white works good). you can also get crabs off the docks. Good Luck!

Seabass fishing from the jetty can be a lot of fun and very productive. There are two ways of fishing I would suggest, and both work great. 1st is a jig and curly tailed grub or zoom fluke fished mid water column. I usually use about a 3/8oz jighead with either a small Kalin silver grub or a baby bass colored zoom fluke. I cast out and let it sink for a few seconds and retrieve at a steady pace while twitching it. 2nd option is a float and bait. I will usually walk half way out and fish the bait about 12ft under the bobber. Chunks of shrimp work good, but chunks of squid work even better! Lingcod is also open and its not unusual to hook one especially if you get your jig close to the jetty. Best of luck!

How did you do ? I love the jetty, you never know what you might catch. Seabass, cabezon, lingcod, greenling, sculpin, and other rock fish. I've seen sharks and lots of salmon. I've only gotten out once this year, after a big ling and came home with crab and 8 seabass. I've seen some big 35+ inch lings come off of it and keepers are pretty common. I take 2 rods , one lighter rod for seabass and a longer, stouter rod for lings and 40+ lb braid. If you hook a bigger fish you have to horse it in and keep your rod up or they'll dive into the rocks and out of your life forever. Fishing the jetty can be dangerous, the weather can change fast and jumping from boulder to boulder in the rain is not fun. Have I mentioned that I love the westport jetty? It's an adventure every time.
