Natches Pass/Gov't Meadows/Taneum Access???????
« on: August 08, 2016, 09:02:03 PM »
Hey all,

I drew an early M/L elk tag for the Taneum.

I've hunted lots of the unit over the years.....   Especially the Eastern half and the NW portion.

So, I have some decent knowledge of some of the unit.

I also used to hunt the Little Natches and drive over Natches Pass, but it's been years.     There used to be a gate up top at Natches Pass but it was always open.

My questions:
1.  Is Natches Pass still reachable via the Gov't Meadows road?
2.  Can you access the SW portion of the Taneum that way?
3.  Might it be a good place to find a cow elk Oct. 1?    I know the LN has elk up in that area.

I'm feeling the need for a scouting trip.

Thanks in advance.

I know you can get up and over from green water going over pyramid, you turn before govt meadows to go up and over... Not sure if you can make it over to the taneum side.

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with Pyramid.

Do you know if there's a FS road number, or is there another way to tell me how to go via Pyramid?

Just take FS 70 up towards govt meadows out of greenwater instead of going straight towards govt meadows you will have to take a left and that will take you over pyramid... You will end up in the little naches 1900 rd. Probably be easier to figure out looking at an atlas.

only way from taneum to 410 is over 1701 . inless you take the shoe string or rock creek . I know the access off the 41 road is washed out past Tacoma pass . I'm not ure if you can get around further west off 52 road . Really with that tag just hit 18 to 90 and hunt from stampede east .

If you go up the 1701 just past the 2nd fork of Wenas creek, there's a jeep/ATV trail that goes up the hill going north.  At the top of the hill, veer left and that trail takes you to the Taneum past Manastash Lake on your right (you can see the lake from the trail).  You could walk in to but it's a bit of a hike, not too bad.  Good luck.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

is this what anyone is talking about? I almost exclusively drive forest service roads without having a clue what their name/numbers are. I am not sure if this is how I did it before. I can't find anywhere online that shows gates so some of these may be closed?

The map that Jpmiller has just posted will have you on the West side of the Crest Trail and out of the area of your tag. you need to go in at the Stampede Pass exit to stay in the unit. Dan-o, shoot me a PM and I will give you a few ideas. We have hunted that country off and on since the early 80's.

The route is Westside for the most part but dumps you into the western part of the 336 unit.

JPMiller's map does take you in to the Taneum unit.  It appears to connect with I-90 at the Stampede Pass exit, so as was stated already, that route will take you in to the NW portion of the Taneum unit.

Roger that.......   I figured you knew the area just a little      ;)

Thanks all...    I'm gonna go play up there this weekend and see if I can't find some place fun.

Sure appreciate the inputs.
