Need help with info on this ak
« on: August 24, 2016, 08:44:23 PM »
So I was handed down an arsenal that filled my safe when my father in law passed a few years ago. Starting to did into what I have now and just have no knowledge of AKs.

This is a Norinco chambered for 5.56. It originally had a bayonet attached that I took off so it fits better in my safe.

Just looking for any info someone might be able to share with me about the rig as I'd like to start adding a few nicer components and get a little trigger time at some point. I'll be doing a full take down and cleaning as it is much needed.

Thanks,

Colin

I do know that the stamped triangle with the 66 inside of it means that it was made in factory 66. Where that gets me though I don't know. Looking at some components from ATI but now sure about fitment.

The Chicom recievers are narrower (just a little maybe .100) so you have to fit aftermarket handguards and buttstocks.

Pretty nice setup the way it is.

Maybe look at installing an optics rail to the reciever and use one of the AKM pattern optics?

Was thinking along the lines of replacing the pistol grip and stock with after market pistol grip and adjustable stock possibly a folder as well as adding forend grip/rails to mount optics. Is there a way to mount optics further back on the receiver instead of forend?

You can drill and tap a side rail attachment, not sure I'd do it. I've shot my buddys AK with a red dot on the ultimak rail that replaces the top handguard. At around $50 for the rail its a tough set up to beat.

I like this guy for AK advise, he has a lot of good info,  he might even have a video on the Chinese AK.

Apparently this is a model 84S and from what I'm reading it's a fairly rare gun. Downside it doesn't take standard AK mags :(

Don't you dare drill into the receiver for some stupid optics!  I'm not a fan of anything 5.56, but the 84s is pretty neat.  Good luck finding well priced mags though. The beauty of the AK platform is it's not like an AR where you have to clean them religiously to function reliably.  No cleaning required. Ever.

For a long time, Norinco made 1911s better than Colt.  They're manufacturing is sound.

I wouldn't touch that thing with anything that can't be un-done and not leave a trace. It's setup just fine the way that it sits IMO. Besides, a scope on an AK is wishful thinking on the part of that platform.

If you really want to find info on it then the AK files would be a good place to look.

Yeah I'm thinking I'll leave it as is, maybe grab a AR if I want something to mess with mods on.

Don_D that's actually where I posted to find out that it was an 84S.

Better not wait on getting an AR and all the mags you need for it. Hanauer, Gates, Bloomberg, and Allen are all hot to trot to get AR and high capacity mag control passed in WA.

That's a cool rifle.

The Norinco 84S was only imported into the U.S. for two years in the mid 1980's, 1984 and 85 if memory is correct and not in very large numbers.  They had two configurations; under folding stock and fixed stock, both came with two metal 30 round mags, sling, bayonet and manual printed in English.

Not sure on the value of the one you have because it does not have the original wood furniture.  Asking prices have been in the $700.00 to $2,400.00 depending on condition, how complete and original they are.  Yours would be on the low end of this range I think.

AK74 mags will work in it if you need extras.

I stand corrected.

You have an 84S-5 with bakelite stock and furniture so the ignore my previous valuation WAG.

The 84S-1 is the under folding stock with wood.

The 84S is wood stock and funiture

Appreciate the info. Akfiles.com said it was an 84S-3A. Think I'll have to be posting questions about an AR soon. Lol.
