I am going to be heading over to the Teanaway for the opening weekend of Modern. This is my first trip over there and am looking for a little advice. I will be taking a friend with me who I would really like to get a buck, I am not to worried I can kill a Blacktail in the late season.
Another one of my friends has killed two good bucks over there two years in a row (both 25" and wider). But the spot he told us to go seems to be down in the bottoms (the local herd). After doing some research everyone says to get up high (around 6000 ft.). I have did some looking at aerials and planning routes but am still unsure. Should I go where he told me about (alot of hunters down low) or try to get up high.
We went and scouted over there on Labor Day weekend. We hiked up to Yellow Hill didn't get there until 10:00 and it was already 85. We seen some decent deer sign, but without motorcycles find that area is useless (would be getting passed early in the morning).
Possible spots I have looked at are Iron Peak, Bean Creek, Stafford Creek, as well as around Jolly Mountain. I want to stay away from the motorbikes and would like to get high and do some glassing above the thick stuff.
The Guy I talked to with WDFW says that bean creek and stafford creek are closed to motorized use. Are there any good deer numbers up there?
ANy help would be appreciated - I am not looking for a monster just a good buck for my buddy to shoot.
Thank You
