Cows and spikes
« on: September 13, 2016, 06:35:29 AM »
People having any luck on cows or spikes? I got a cow on Saturday and my sons friend got one on Sunday. It was his first time elk hunting so he was pretty excited. The bulls were going nuts up where we were. Good times.

I blew two shots at cows on Saturday...one was out of my range and I attempted a hands and knees creep in to get within range...fifteen minutes and a charlie-horse later, I peeked around the tree that was giving me cover, and she was heading slowly up the ridge out of the marshy area she was feeding in.  Later that night, I had a cow clear the pine tree that was covering my draw about a second too early and she caught me mid-draw...had to finish pulling back and at 10 yards, that little bit of movement spooked her.  Still a fun day in the woods.  Sunday was a zoo where I was at, more hunters than I have ever seen in the woods and not any elk in the area...they all went to their safe hidey holes.  Hopefully I find them again later this week.  Congrats on the Cow and to your son's friend.

Nailed a spike at ~20 yards on Sunday in 328. Had called over a few cows but the bulls were being protective. My bull had what looked like a pregnant cow. Her belly was substantially larger than the other cows in her herd.
