Salmon around Tri-Cities ?
« on: September 14, 2016, 11:13:36 AM »
Is any one fishing them or better yet catching them ? I have been out 4 times and nothing. I could sure use some advise or tips on what works. I have fished them of and on for a few years and just cant figure them out. I have thought about a guide to learn from but that's kind of spendy. I would appreciate any help or advise. Need to bring one home to show the wife I really am fishing  :chuckle:

Its not that you need to bring one home to show the wife your fishing but catching. Haven't fished up there but the price of a guide for a day will take lite years off of your learning curve. :twocents:

The reach around ringold should be picking up here any day. Usually lead ball and flasher with brads super baits with tuna in oil inside.fish tend to be 15 to 30 ft. Around the middle of the water colum. Early bite is best. Be there early lots of boats. The biggest group of people will tell you where the fish are. Or you can try the same setup in the mouth of the yakima.

Also pay close attention to the damage counts. Fpc.org under fisherman link. Will tell you where the mass of nooks are. Good luck and tight lines.

We caught two this week... 10oz cannonball, silver protroll flash and hot tamale superbait packed with oil based tuna. I am running 24" to flash and 36" to superbait. Some are running shorter leader to superbait but 36" has worked for me.  Keep your troll slow so your rod tip has a nice slow pulse. As funny as it might sound I searched a lot on youtube and watched other peoples videos to learn a little since I don't have any mentors myself. There was one video that was pretty good from a guide fishing fall chinook at DRANO.   I have only just started fishing salmon this year on the Columbia also and noticed that if priest rapids damn flow is high it's almost not worth it. I spent most of the day clearing weeds off my line, however  low flow days were awesome I could troll using electric motor and no weeds... I got mine going downriver in front of baitman island with all the other yahoos out there. Some guys will work below the 182 bridge near Howard Amon park on the Richland side of the river. I have personally  not had any luck there yet. I think most people hang around baitman island because the river funnels down right there.

Good info ! Sounds like i am doing things right. Just no fish. I have hit the mouth if the Snake, up above Richland and below Baitman along Columbia park. I don't really like fishing in crowds but i may have to. Every one I have talked to is having the same problem with trash on their gear. I have tried staying close to the bottom but most of the fish I'm marking on the finder seem to be mid column. Moved up to that depth but the trash kept me cleaning off my gear more than i actually fished. I have used a couple different flashers and a variety of super baits. Good info on the flow from Priest rapids dam Roo, I will have to pay attention to that. Thanks ! Heard tell yesterday that above Ringold is good now.
