Sick to my stomach!!
« on: October 07, 2007, 08:53:45 PM »
I went deer scouting today for next weekend.  Got up a ridgeline and found a freshish pile of bear poop.  Set up and started calling.  After about 20 minutes I was going to continue scouting but decided to keep calling till the 30 min mark.  A few seconds after that I looked right and on the hillside over, about 60 yards I could see the back half of a bear walking.  It stopped and I could see from the mid section on back.  I called softly and he started on in, down a little dip and disappeared.  I was watching a spot where I expected to see him come out and what seemed like forever, all the sudden there he was a little more off to my right and shuffling up at about 30 yards head on.  He stopped at the trail I came in on and started getting nervous.  I will forever regret my next move.  I had to lean out just a little and was slightly cantered, but at 25 yards I figured I'd anchor him.  I took a bad angle shot at his chest at 25 yards.....and missed him.  25 yards, scoped 30.06 and I missed him.   :dunno:  Beautiful deep chocolate bear.  Probably in the 250 pound range.  I spent the next 5 hours combing the hillside and draws and found nothing, no hair, no blood nothing.  I have a new nightmare.  Unbelievable.   :'( :'(

I hear you. I was out helping my buddie kill a buck with a muzzlloader up near Brewster this weekend and blew a chance an awesome bear. I usually pack my 44 mag. I feel comfortable shoot up to 100 yards and have always wanted to shoot a bear with a pistol. I had so much gear (video camera, spotting scope, backpack for the day, ect) that I left my sidearm in the truck. Well, I was pushing a patch of aspens when a 250-300 cinnimon bear bolted out 30 yards in front of me!!! I don't know if I would have got a shot off with my pistol but I really makes me mad that I will never  know becase my pistol was was in the truck.  >:( >:( >:(    The sucker was so fat. He had no ears at all. And to boot we covered 12 miles of some of the best deer country around and coudn't connect on a buck. We had fun and thats all that matters I guess.

Ugh...that sucks...at least you called one in and got a shot off ;) I missed an elk during archery, and just before I missed it, I was tellin my bro that I would be happy with a miss, just as long as I got a decent shot at something...sure enough...wish granted by hunting gods...and shot blocked by lone branch...;) All in good fun I guess. Good luck on the continued search.

Bummer...those close misses really suck, but spooking the bear sucks more..

Yep, now he's educated to calls.  Maybe I'll see him again next weekend while I take my son up there deer hunting.
