First hunt of the season
« on: October 09, 2016, 07:46:48 AM »
Finally got out after some pheasants yesterday. My lab drakes never been out after them before so I was interested to see how he did. He had VERY minimal upland training before like hardly any at all, so I was really happy with how he started out. He quartered pretty good and didn't get out of range at all. But after the first hour you could tell he was getting tired from all the running. We kept hunting and towards the end of the afternoon my friends dog puts a bird up and down it goes. Drake retrieves it like a champ, as soon as the birds delivered you could tell he had kind of a lightbulb situation cause back he goes into the crk bottom/ bushes and up comes two more birds. Down goes the last bird to fill out limit. It was really cool to see that small light go off. I had one tired dog on my hands when we got back to the truck. We took some time off from training cause my son is about a year old so we haven't been able to get out much. But I'm planning on training more and hopefully we can get after these ditch chickens more. It was a fun day for sure.
