Can you hunt deer there?
« on: October 03, 2007, 08:53:50 PM »
In the WA State Gazette maps, there is a small area that looks like you can hunt birds and deer in between the Nisqually Wildlife refuge and the port. Is that true? If so, have you hunted it? Id guess it gets plenty of bird hunt pressure but not much if any deer. Whats are your thoughts?

If there is a huntable tract there...what are the boundries? Can it be accessed by land or just through the port?

Just wondering...I can be there in like 10 mins from the house ;)

Are you talking about on McAllister Creek? If so, it is only accessible by boat, and from what I have heard, you need to get there EARLY to get a spot. We duck/goose hunt just across I-5 from there, and usually hear some shooting going on out there.

so you hunt the paid club on the dry side of I-5 of the NRB?

I guessed it would be hit hard for ducks/geese...any ideas about deer hunting the dirt part of the area?

Do people hunt the water in the cut there or park and shoot from the banks?

Nope, I don't hunt the paid club. Not sure if its the one you are talking about, but the only paid club left out there that I know of is quite a ways up the valley. The one that used to be out on the delta is no more.

I'm not sure about deer hunting out there, but I don't think there is really any opportunity.

I believe the only way to hunt ducks/geese out there is from a boat, and you can hunt around the mouth of the Nisqually (I believe), or you can hunt part of McAllister Creek, and if you are motoring up the creek, there are refuge boundary signs that you cant go past.

Most of the creek is un huntable. The farther you go (towards the gun club) the more open it gets, but if you kill one from the creek and it drops on land ...don't get caught collecting it! They are really tight on trespassing. Many years ago my father had land owner permission to trap in there, but we were always hassled by the club hunters who thought we were looking for ducks.

The land you are looking at for deer used to be prime area but it was firearm restricted. Now it is either part of Lacey or has no shooting ordinance.

How long ago was that? The Thomsen's are really good friends of ours.

Most of the family has been clients of my dad's for a long time now. The only ones I have met are John, his daughter (I can't recall her name), and John's son Ken, and then Ken's son. We've been hunting on their land for probably close to 7-8 years now.
