Help me understand youth moose
« on: April 13, 2026, 06:40:20 PM »
Not sure if I'm reading this right? How can the average tag winner for youth moose have 12 points?
Also side note, the lack of youth opportunities for deer and elk antlered is kind of a joke. Why not have a full youth separate season similar to what other states do?

That was the only thing I could think of. You've got to have a wild ID to get points but you must not have to pass Hunter safety to be able to apply? Cuz they dump off as soon as the kids are 16 by the looks of it?

Buying them points since their birth.

 :yeah:

A loophole that should be closed in my opinion.  Not at all fair for the kids / families that don't know about it and are at a very clear disadvantage.  it's already like hitting the lottery in this state.

They did “close” the loophole.  Now the only way to purchase a point is if you have a hunting license, not just a wild# Id number that you could get by buying a fishing license.   If the kid has a wild id and can purchase a hunting license, meaning they passed hunters ed, they can buy a point.  The loophole now is having such smart infants passing online hunters ed…

It’s definitely closed. I bought points for my kids from age zero. I have 2 that are hunting and one that shows no interest, but hopefully the two will draw a tag with the added advantage.

The loop hold is closed. I started buying my son points since the year he was born. He had 16 points when he aged out. They closed it after he had passed hunters safety. Can’t remember what year. But just goes to show you points don’t matter.

What others have mentioned above is true.  :yeah:

What is blatantly clear is the downturn in available moose tags (and all other tags too) as compared to 10-15+ years ago. Predators?? Naw.... :bash:

Youth moose is nothing but a money grab. One tag. That’s ridiculous. Take a few more of the 8 to 10 they offer in some of the units on the regular cow tags and give them to the kids. But no state would do that unless of course they’re trying to foster new hunters at a young age which our state definitely does not. Along with someone putting these kids in since they were born to have that many points, they could’ve also turned grandpa in for a hunting violation and got 10 extra that way

The only thing i see i like for the youth hunters is they cut down on the Doe tags over east and created more any buck tags. i would much rather have more spike and 2 points killed than does.
Remember that buck is climbing that Mt. every day!
