Handheld GPS horrible battery life
« on: November 18, 2016, 06:30:11 PM »
I have a Oregon 650 gps I'm using with the Montana state chip. I hunt all day tell it's dark around 4:45.. the GPS is on around 80% of the time. I am going through two sets of batteries a day. Is that normal? Any way to get better battery life out of this thing?

I have an oregon and it chews through batteries, even Li. I now have a Montana with built in rechargeable and I love it. I run at  60% all day and never go below 50%. Plus the Montana can take AA also.

My oregon eats batteries....only complaint I have.  I never leave mine on for any longer than I have to.  It boots up fast, finds antena fast and is a pretty amazing unit, except for the batter life.   At first I was really bothered by the fact it eats batteries fast....but then I re-evaluated my use of it and I never have to leave it on for long periods of time.  I never make trails and primarily use it for topography, and waypoints.    I usually will get 2-3 days worth of battery life out of mine using it like I do.

I use the costco / Kirkland AA now....never noticed a big enough difference to buy the expensive ones.

I make sure my backlight is turned off to the lowest setting during the day.  I don't have the oregon but turning off the backlight helps on my etrex.

That seems a bit extreme.  Maybe a bad battery from the get go?  My Montana was going 2-3 solid days even with taking pictures on the one battery.  It is the battery that came with it.  I am guessing I get a solid 20 hours at least off of a charge.

Use lithium batts and only turn it on when you need to mark waypoints.  Navigate beteeen points with compass.  I only change batts once every week or so in my old lowance.

:yeah: I have the 655T and the lithium pack. I keep it turned off unless I need it to check boundaries, waypts, the way out. It lasts for several days.
