Need tips on how to find private land
« on: November 26, 2016, 09:53:56 AM »
From Vancouver wa.....Vancouver lake and shilapoo are just zoos with no ducks. Went there today and there was a sea of flashlights all over the fields this morning. Cars lined up all over the side of the roads. Didn't even see one duck flying in the sky so we decided to just leave. We normally hunt somewhere else that is a honey hole and there are hundreds of ducks in the morning but we couldn't go today. Are there  any other pubic land spots besides Vancouver lake, shilapoo, and ridgefield? How do you go about finding public land? Do you just look for farmers who have a bunch of wetlands and ask them if you can hunt it? I was thinking maybe working on a farmers farm over the summer then asking them is i can hunt their land.

Oh and don't forget the pheasant hunters at shilapoo. It's just a sea of hunter orange all around the fields

Great idea. Get to know as many farmers as you can in your area and you'll start getting access. It might take a few years working on different places to get a good list of contacts, but you'll get there eventually.

I've never tried to ask for access from someone I don't know. It seems like it would be tough because they don't have any reason to help you and don't know if you can be trusted.

offer to do some help around the farm or house in exchange for some hunting time.  Farmers are always looking for hands

One thing that has helped me get permission in the past is to offer a trade.  They may be more willing to listen if you can offer up a salmon fillet or package of pepperoni.

One thing that cut down the crowd for me was to hunt federal land.   The 25 shell limit seems to thin some of the shooters out.

Get dialed in on a successful career, then spend the fruits of your labor on a duck club

All of the private land surrounding Shillapoo has leases on it for ducks and geese. Fazio is the major landowner down there but there are a couple of others, including that dairy farm.
