Long Bow question
« on: December 06, 2016, 10:53:42 AM »
Hi folks,

Looking to get my 22 year old son a long bow for xmas. Wondering if anyone has any recommendations and what poundage I should get. We archery hunt for Elk so just want to make sure he has enough power. He's young and strong currently shooting 70# compound.

Thinking 55 or 60$ for a long bow?

Thoughts anyone?
thanks in advance.

55# max at his new draw length! Nothing shorter than 62" either for a first timer! It's much tougher to draw than a compound & hold long enough to be accurate! After a couple of shots he'll think the 55# longbow is tougher to draw than his 70# compound bow! (grin)

You might consider starting him at a lower weight and he can trade up later. I'd recommend 45 lbs so he can hold back at full draw and agree with Paul's suggestion about the long bow length. I had a beautiful Jim Reynolds that I had to sell because it was too much bow for my old shoulders.

I agree with what has been said, start with lighter weight. easier to shoot and more enjoyable. You can always move it up in poundage later.

Thanks Paul and gang, appreciate the feedback. Was definitely looking at a 64" bow.

Maybe late for X-mas, but I've had good luck with Check-mate bows and the price is good, if they are still available.

Not a longbow, but the low dollar Samick bows are a blast and a great place to start. Make a good carp bow as well when a guy moves up.

I agree with 45# max. I shoot compound, recurve, and longbow. Holding 45# at full draw is harder and different than pulling past 70# at half draw and holding 15# at full draw. A guy needs to learn form with an easily controllable draw weight.

With my 55# recurve I can hold my draw for about a three count before I start to waver and shake abit. Its pretty much see the spot you want to hit, draw, aim and release. Theres no holding your draw till the perfect moment.

Buy a cheap 35-45# bow to learn on then get a nice 55# bow to transition to and hunt with. Maybe 60-65 if hes strong.
