Swanson Lakes and Gus's first birds
« on: October 23, 2007, 09:35:00 PM »
Wow, what a day. Got up and drove to Creston then south to the Fish and Wildlife Headquarters office there. Sat down and spoke with Juli Anderson, the game warden for that area. Great lady with a ton of knowledge to offer new visitors to the area.

I wanted to go hunting but figured the hour with her would not hurt me at all since she was giving free information and good advice.

The first place I went to ate up 5.82 miles according to my GPS and no birds but sign of hunting from last season and possible this season. The second spot ate up 3.0 miles and again no birds but I did meet another bird hunter from Winthrop, WA. He was not being successful either but we were both having a good day being out and about.

The third spot was no walking miles at all. We, Gus and I, were driving along on a two rut when I see some Huns, so I pull over, get the shot gun out, load up and venture forward. I see two birds flush up in front at about 20 or 25 yards so I blast with the bottom barrel, IM. Down they both come, except the farthest one seems to be in good shape so to limit his getting away I nail him with the second barrel.
As soon as the second barrel goes off the third Hun flushes off of my left shoulder and flies away. If I had held off not shooting I'd of had him too. But like the old adage says: Better two in the hand than three in the bush.

I had to show off Gus with his very first birds. I forgot the camera at home so these will have to do.

Thanks for the report. I had a bit of fun chasing huns out there last year. Lots of room to roam!

Julie is the resident, Wildlife Area Manager; not the Warden and from all reports a great person to get info. about the area, M-F.
