they go bang everytime, very sturdy, well built. shoot 2-4 inch groups at 100 yards, sometimes worse. depends on what you want. I believe Bill Ruger designed them s security/prison guard rifle.

What Carl said. They are really fun to shoot, but accuracy is a real problem. I have the stainless ranch version. Sometimes I can't hit a paper plate at 100 yards. But sometimes I get 2" groups. My buddy's is the same way. It's a hoot to slap in a 30 rounder and go to town. I bought mine when there was basically one choice in AR's. I would buy an AR WAY before a Mini 14. Just my opinion though.

Adding one of those accu-struts improved mine. Well, made it more consistent I guess, but still was like a 2-3" group at 100 yards shooter.

They're real easy to take down and re assemble.

They are a good choice for a home defense weapon, I agree with what NRA4LIFE said as well.

Because ARs are so easily available now.
I owned a mini-30, wish I never sold it.
I would not be opposed to owning a mini-30 Tactical or a Scout Rifle in .308.

Agree with all comments, but would like to add. . . . .
Owners say that recently manufacture are better in the accuracy department. Still, distant second to most any AR15.
I have seen a couple Mini14 rifles that were re-barreled and tuned , owners claimed that "fixed" the poor accuracy. Re-barrel job on that rifle might cost as much as the rifle, so not a great option unless you are a die hard Ruger fan and want to have one of the few Minis that could run with an AR.
Everybody agrees they are a great fun bullet hose, good for a truck/boat gun.

Ruger redesigned the barrel on the Mini14 due to accuracy complaints, so you'll want to get one of the newer series rifles, I think they're the 580 and larger serial numbers that you want. They're extremely picky on what mags they'll reliably feed from and factory mags aren't cheap. That said they're a nice compact little rifle with good capacity and great ergonomics. I shoot my AR's way more than my Mini14, but still couldn't imagine not owning one.

I have one, they are fun to shoot. I wanted a truck gun for coyotes, racoons, and other varmints I run across around the property. I like the feel more than an AR. I have a newer version so the accuracy is pretty good. Still waiting to run across a pack of yotes and let 30 rounds go!

In the defense of mine, I have killed a couple mule deer with it and my best antelope buck ever.

Walmart in Choctaw, OK (7 miles from my house) always has 5 or 6. They have a sweet 300 BLK I would love to have.
I asked the 60+ year old lady behind the counter how many they sold? She said it was one of their most popular rifles.

This thread got me to dig my Mini-14 out of the back of the safe and spend some range time with it. I'm having significant extraction issues (extractor not fully gripping each case and leaving spent casings in the chamber) which appear to be common for this rifle. I'll be shipping it back to Ruger for service/repair as necessary.
