I will check out the ih8mud deal. Some of the info I've been reading says it could be a bent axle, some say it's not adjustable, some say it is adjustable.....
The bearings can go out at the steering knuckle (actually a bearing, not a ball joint). They are like a wheel bearing. They do wear out because they are normally sitting in one position all their life. I believe there are also shims avail to adjust the spindle off of the axleI have 2 FJ40s 1971, and 1976...........need parts?SPC catalog, page 106 shows bearings with pre-ground offsetsThe right side is the short side of the axle. I wouldn't think the housing would be bent there.Also, it is ALMOST the same as a pickup solid front axle.

I think the bearings you're talking about are trunnion bearings.
