Loft Size Advice
« on: March 15, 2017, 02:33:00 PM »
Seems like everyone is gearing up for training season!

I'm in the process of designing a loft, I'd like to keep around 4 pigeons.  Do you guys think this will be big enough for that?  It's based on the Lion Country Supply loft, although I don't have plans for that so I'm knocking out a set of my own.

IIRc the general rule is 2 sq ft per bird, minimum; so how many birds do you want to keep?

Also, I dig the double aviary if you are going to go for LCS style loft. More light, more access to space and fresh air for the birds.

Mine was similar to your design.

I built a loft based on the Lion Country Supply plans. I like it a lot. It's good for about 5-6 pigeons tops. In the summer you can cram more in there but come winter the birds that don't have perches to sit on get crapped on by the others and will eventually die, from the cold, if you don't do something about it.

If you put wood chips, think the bags of the stuff you can find at places like Fred Meyer or Wal Mart in the pet section, the birds are likely to lay eggs and yes they will hatch. Good for maintaining your own supply of birds.

Be sure to put a security hatch over the bobbed opening. You don't want hawks (yes, they will go in there) or other predators getting in there.
