RL33 temp testing?
« on: April 08, 2017, 12:11:35 PM »
I have a rifle being built and some really really good grouping with RL33.  Curious if anyone has done any testing for temp sensitivity?

we've done some testing with RL33.  It is temp sensitive.  I had a good load developed in my 300RUM in the 30 - 40 degree F ambient temp range.  When I shot the same group in 60 - 70 degree F it increased in velocity enough to push me off a node.  Others I shoot with have seen similar results and actually done ammo freeze testing with it.  If you develop your load in temps you expect to hunt in it's probably good to go.  For year round shooting in a variety of temps then it may let you down, depending upon how forgiving of an accuracy node your dealing with.  i've gone to Hodgdon Extreme powders for all my guns now.  H1000, H50BMG, Ramshot Magnum all pretty stable.

I was thinking about doing the same thing with testing.  I have a bunch of retumbo to try to.  The load was developed at around 50 degrees.  It would be for hunting but I would like to have the peace of mind knowing that it doesn't matter on different temps.

I've found Retumbo to be very stable.  I forgot to mention that one.  Retumbo is the powder I'm now using in my 300RUM.  My velocity doesn't vary by more than 20 fps in temps from 30 degrees F up to 60 degrees F.  What cartridge are you shooting?

No not Ryan Pierce.  I have seen his builds and he does use RL33 and 195's.  Hell's Canyon Armory built it.  I am picking it up tomorrow.

Retumbo is one of there extreme powders. If you look at the label and it say extreme on it. That is one of there more temp stable powders. They are the best for stable velocity's in different temps.

It's a 27" HCA Carbon barrel 1:8 twist
McMillian game warden adjustable
Lone Peak Arms titanium action
Hawkins botton metal, scope rings
Swarovski X5 3-18x50
Xtreme hardcore gear break

This was the first 4 shots out of the barrel yesterday.

Sweet set up dude.  There's some good 28 Nosler load data with 195 EOL's over at Len Bakus' forum.

Another guy on here has one of Mikes 28 Noslers and is having good luck with Retumbo banging steels at 1100 yards with the 195 Bergers.

Yep that's me. Have another 6.5wsm he is building also.  Going to try retumbo and maybe do some temp testing on RL33.
