wish i was a better caller

i just started coyote hunting this year (January) and this morning is the first time i got one to answer me. it was pretty exiting, he kept calling back to me for about 25 minutes but i couldn't get him to come out of the trees. to add insult to injury after sitting for some time and not getting any more responses i walked back out to the truck and there was a fresh pile of coyote crap right behind my truck, guess i know what he was doing while he wasn't answering

Well your not a alone my friend, it sure has happened to me a few times too.

If you have one "hang up" in the woods, barking at ya, then it's time to pull out your bag of tricks. You need to learn to make a "pup in distress", this will a lot times work to your behalf.

Getting to learn their vocals, figuring out what their saying, is a challenge and after several years then you can out smart them...

First of all we all arent "perfect" hunter! I am deaf  I asked Lord why am I here for stupid sake  . We cant get everything we want. I kept see everybody bragging on thier Kill and dang nice picture they got and I had TOTALLY having HARD time deal with it everyday with everything. I cant hear BULL bugling, I cant make perfect bugling call but can do Cow calls but cant hear them coming to me and it really FRUSTRATE ME,  I cant hear Turkey calling back from which side? I did asked professional caller and never got one because its not always perfect place to hunt. I cant hear their Coyote howling, I had to use my Eye everywhere that something moves ha I have only shot about 11 Coyotes in whole my life. I can shoot more than that if I am serious about it but  Coyote is the MOST smarter dog! Its like Every year Bear, Coyote and Wolves LEARN how to change better way to fool US! We must LEARN and adjust patiently a way to hunt them. u cant just drive up and pick a spot and make a caller. We all have to learn where they been around for while and hunt them better. I hunt and ALMOST Impossible for me to kill anything myself that I love to hunt. Some People are very lucky and Did a long practice on caller and start to learn what best way to get Coyote come to u  and probablly Some arent a "TRUE HUNTER" that do Snares, Foot trapping, all Bs that was in picture wasnt a caller hunter!
 I am very happy for who I am and accept whatever I can do or not,

 Patiently with your time and you will be successed.

I think now you are beginning to see that you are gaining respect for the coyote and soon you will be a full fledged addict. Now you have the choice to continue or quit. Just remember, there is no better addiction than to the great outdoors.

i was howling and using pup yips, i was able to move around and got him to answer while i was moving. im pretty sure he busted me but he never came out of the tree line. ive always had a huge amount of respect for the coyote and ive jumped into coyote hunting all the way. i havent even got one yet and im loving it.

Hey, I am new to the site but not new to calling coyotes.  I have been doing it for almost 12 years so maybe I can give you some insite.  If you are new to calling try not to use much vocalization until you learn what each bark and howl mean.  Vocalization is much more of a science than just distress but if used right, can be twice as effective.  I wasn't with you so I don't know the facts of what happened but coyotes make many different barks and howls, and it sounds like he smelled a rat and was alarm barking.  Many times a coyote will pick you off weather it be seeing you, smelling you, or just simply they have been around the block and sensed something.  What they will do then is they will just stand there and let everone else know that something is going on.  In the months of January and Febuary use alot of Female invitation howls and pup distress.  Challenge barks are key too but you must be careful because you don't want to intimidate the wrong coyote.  What I mean is if you sound like a dominate male, almost all females and small males will just leave because they are not going to mess with the top dog. Be patient and sit on stand for up to 20 minutes.  Alot of times what I do is howl just to locate a pack, then move on them with the wind in my favor and give them that pup in distress.  Then, just dont miss.

thanks furbearer  could you give me some advice on what calls i should buy/use. id appreciate it. right now i have a cotton tail distress call i use and a cheap electronic call that has some pup yips and howls on it. that's what the yote was answering to. im going to get a foxpro but it will be a while, plus id like to learn how to speak the language with mouth calls.

I know he has been traveling a lot.  He is probably out of town.

ya Fur,  is right. that dog found you out and was sending out an alarm. if that thing was almost barking like a dog in a yard, then that was the case. no way your gonna get that dog in, and he has pretty much ruined it for that stand, for a while atleast. i have manged to kill two of these guys by flanking them. they just keep barking and i just keep stalking.
don't move around. sit at least 20 minutes. use binos, even in thicker areas. often a dog will come in and just sit. he's in range, ya just don't know he's there, ya gotta pick him out.
quite often as well, as happened to me two weeks ago, a dog will run in to ya from a direction that you don't anticipate, within 20 seconds of calling, you will see him as he is about to run by, but ya can't stop him cause the guns pointed the wrong way, ya can't move cause he is now 10 feet away from you, and as you kick at him as he runs past the back of your leg while your are standing there hugging a tree like its a long lost relative, you may have to wheel around with your AR and snap off a shot at maybe 15 yards, on the rapidly retreating dog, then seeing you miss you snap off a couple more shots, at maybe another 25 then 35 yards, then when the dog, most likely out of boredom, because of the long cold winter, starts to feel sorry for you while laughing at the same time mind you, he may decide that rather than run into the protection of trees, decides instead to run straight out into an open field, allowing you to snap off maybe 8 more well aimed shots, till you are empty. and then as if to show pitty for your lack of marksmanship, might actually stop one time for maybe 10 seconds on a hill 250 yards away to say farewell, as he probably heard your bolt lock to the rear signaling your empty, errrrr ....got off track there, Anyways, *censored* happens, no matter your experience. Actually if you don't realize it, you did call well, because you called in that yote. he just smelled ya or happened to see you before you saw him. it was no accident he was there, so good job.
i called one to within 10 feet once, got it on video, had to choose between running the cam or grabbin the gun, saw i rolled film. after he passed me, i soon heard him nearby barking, warning all the other dogs in the area, also got that on the audio, it was a good lesson as i was able to immediatly relate the two events. his barking was so persistant, that i was able to stalk and kill him. since then i have had this happen to me many many times.
i would highly recommend you buy one of randy andersons dvd's, "calling all coyotes" or "the truth III", ya will learn alot. mainly by watching the yotes body language as they come in. good luck.

you know i guess your right, i did call him in. i feel a little better about that. i do have a lot to learn and im eager to learn it. hunting is my passion and getting into this varmit hunting has been a lot of fun
