I love mine. It is not a pistol you will enjoy shooting a lot of .44 mag out of. However it is a lot of fun to take to the range and shoot 44 special. The L frame 69 (practice with 44 spl and carry 44 mag) are like the .357 K and J frames(practice with 38 spl and carry .357 mag). The 69 is a lot smaller than a N frame and makes carrying it much more pleasent. I would give the gun a good look over before you buy. Some of the ones i looked at had a bur on the muzzle crown and or other fit and finish issues. Finding holsters for the new 66 -8 and 69 is kind of difficult as the barrel is 4.25 inches vs 4 inches that s&w made in the past. Also the barrels on the 69 and 66-8 are thicker than prevouis models.

I have one.  I love it.  Packs nice, isn't as bulky as my 629's.  It's about the perfect carry gun especially in bear country.  It just has that perfect balanced feel to it, and felt recoil really isn't any more that the 629's.

Edit to add:  From what I hear, if you don't like the recoil with the factory grips, the X-frame, 500 smith grips fit on them, and tame the recoil a bunch.  I haven't had an issue so I haven't bought a set to try.

Or just load it with 44 specials 240's going 1,000 fps and call it good. It is after all, just the rebirth of the 696 with a beefier forcing cone.

Like mentioned I love my model 69.  The only thing Smith could do to make me happier is to make it in .41 magnum.

I have one also i really like it. The recoil is not bad at all to me. When comparing it in the same shooting session to my dads 66-8 same gun basically just in 357 mag the 357 is way more snappy and not as fun to shoot and I know it has a slightly smaller frame but they use the same holsters that's how little difference there is.I also enjoy shooting the 69 more than my 4in 629 even though the 629 weighs more i believe the lower bore axis is what makes the 69 more enjoyable to shoot for me.

Nope mines 4-1/4", which is perfect, so I can legally use it for hunting.  That said the 2-1/4" barrel would be about the best packing 44 mag without going to one the alloy framed ones.
