Grays harbor/Westport fishing
« on: June 21, 2017, 05:33:04 PM »
What kind of fishing/crabbing is available in grays harbor itself?  I've got a 16 foot boat and may be spending lots of time in the area soon.
Looking for info on salmon, bottomfish, and crabbing.  Is it worth pulling the 16 foot bayrunner down?

IMO 16 ft isnt seaworthy for Westport. The Grays Harbor bar is 1 of the most dangerous in the world. With that said if you pick your good weather days there are rockfish to be had off the south jetty. Crabbing is decent there too. For your size boat id wait until the fishery opens in september/october further up river and also check the Willapa (MA 2-1).

. Thanks, I wasn't thinking too much about crossing the bar, just dunking around inside the bay.

My first question for you would be,, How much experience do you have in open water?

Your 16 footer will work fine out there as long as you keep an eye on the water and weather. I fished MANY years out there in a 15' Baycraft. I'm talking 20 plus years. The salmon fishing can be good around the North and South Jetty for both Kings and Silvers. Seabass, lings, and Cabazon are fun on light tackle on both jetties.

Just remember,,Watch the water and weather, and don't challenge your skills, and have fun.  Plus don't forget your life jackets.

I'll be down there for around 10 days in August to fill up on our winter fish. Plus a few days in July. If you have any other question just give me a holler.
