Only 2 years old
« on: June 22, 2017, 05:16:45 PM »
I got my tooth data back from my Montana deer last year. They aged him at only 2 years old. I was thinking he was like 4-5 years old. Does anyone have pictures of their bucks that know how old they are? post them.

Way to shoot a baby before he had time to mature!

That's a heckuba deer for two years. I'd go back this year and find his daddy.

I looked over a lot of young bucks and this guy definitely looked more mature. This is what they sent me.

Nice buck. JP's right about finding daddy! Good luck this season.

That's crazy but it makes sense. If I recall correctly, that huge tri-pod buck from years ago was aged at 3.5--and it was something like an 8 by 10, 30 inch spread.

I'd have guessed 3.5 from the pic.  However, with mild winters, good feed, minerals and genes young deer can grow amazingly fast.  I believe the tooth data over my own eyes.  I have seen quite a few 2.5 year old bucks over the years that were 20-22", 4x4 (with and without eyeguards).  On the flip side, I once checked a small Wyoming 2x2 that I had already decided was a yearling, until I flipped down his lower lip and saw extensive tooth wear - he was lab aged at 5.5
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

It's a draw unit with not much pressure. So not much stress on him except winters.

Lol I hope I end up with one of those baby deer one day. You get the big antlers and the meat isn't as tough. Best of both worlds.
