The 280 Ackley Improved is a great cartridge, but I'd go with something a little more common such as the 270 Win, 30/06, or 300 WSM.   :twocents:

Why?

Again why?

Because, that's what I like. I have a 223 WSSM and I can't buy brass or ammo for it. Never had a problem finding brass for the 243, 270 Win, 30/06, 338 Win Mag.

Also have learned over the years that the headstamp on the cartridge isn't as important as the rifle and the person shooting it.

Oh. Wondering, he didn't ask if anyone like the 280 ai, brass is about a big a issue with a 280 ai as wondering if the sun will come up tomorrow....

Can also fire form .280ai brass from .270 or 06 brass if in a serious pinch and shoot .280 bullets from the .280ai clambering.
I would think you would want to in order to use Lapua Brass - I doubt they sell .280 ai brass...

That's weird, no new input from BH? Maybe I can help by acting as a proxy service until he gets a chance to respond in a day or two or 89. Keep in mind that the following opinions do not necessarily represent those of Biggerhammer or his agents.

"Something, something Tika's suck, something something 22 Nosler. Blah blah blah, 6.5 creedmor, blah blah blah your caliber sucks. Mumble mumble google ninjas, mumble mumble long range hunting with an AR-15."

Since it appears that Jay_sharkbait hasn't officially chimed in either, I'll provide a brief summary of what I believe his input would be:

"Blah blah blah snarky comment, blah blah blah obscure reference that only 3 people will understand."

Let me know if anybody needs additional translations or wild speculations as to the opinions of either Biggerhammer or Jay_sharkbait.

The shoulder is about .010 further forward on a .280.   The shooter will experience hangfires using .280 brass made from -06 unless he jams the bullet into the rifling for fireforming.

I'd imagine you'd need to only partially size the necks to .284 and leave a portion of the neck .308 as to create a false shoulder when you fireform so the case doesn't stretch and thin at the base.  So if you used 270 or 25-06 brass as the parent case you'd have to first neck them up to .308 then partially neck them back down to .284 but I think even at that, you're going to end up with a very short neck.

Even just fireforming 30-06 brass to an AI version in the same caliber will shorten the neck quite a bit but going to 280ai  dimensions from 06 parent cases will likely leave you with a VERY short neck.

You are correct on all of this the neck is short a bit but can be used with all these parent cartridges. Best bet is ai brass or .280 brass fire formed.
