Jump shooting...

New to duck hunting, first year.  I have decided I don't want to purchase a bunch of supplies...decoys, caller, small boat...already have a 20' fish/ski and i'm pretty sure my wife would laugh at me if i even brought up the idea of another boat...

So i'll try jump shooting a bit...anyone do this much?  Any tips?

2 dozen hotbuy mallard dekes at Sportsman's - $40(on sale for $19.99 doz)
1 Haydel's DR-85 duck call - $15.99
1 Decoy bag - $30?

Go find some nice potholes to jumpshoot but instead of shooting just flush them off, set your dekes and wait for them to return.  With weights and cord on the dekes you'll be right around a hundred bucks and have a set up that you'll be able to shoot a few birds over.  Either that or get out now and find some nice ditches that you can walk and jump a few birds off of.  Just a tip, get a cheap orange safety vest to carry with you, you might end up in the middle of a bunch of quail or a rooster and if Johnny Law finds you with upland birds in your vest and no orange you get chosen to donate to their Christmas party! Also, find some steel 6's or even 7's for carrying to shoot the upland birds.  Don't want to have a mixture in your pockets packing waterfowl and upland birds around.

I've heard a few different theories on number of decoys to use...what is your experience there?

  Where do you plan on going or how far you planning to travel? Do you have a dog? Are you in shape to walk a lot?
 Anyway you get the idea, tell us a little more and we(them I'm not a real hunter)may be able to help you more. I live in your area and go to the pot holes area mostly. Don't need much to start hunting and no better way to learn an area then on foot. I hope to hunt every weekend this year. Have to take the kids to the bus on Friday mornings then I come home Sunday

I'd like to stay in central WA mostly, its a quick trip over to the moses lake-quincy-ephreta area, and i'm semi familiar with potholes since i go over there to fish.
I have a 2 yr old lab, but he has not been trained to hunt, he is more or less along for the fresh air and will run up and down hills and through brush at his leisure, but not by any specific command     i think i can still train him if i get out there enough, he's well trained in basic commands. 
i'll pretty much walk as much as i need to...don't have a problem there...may need a break or two though, not in great shape at the moment.

Do you hunt the gloyd seeps area much or the sun lakes area?

I suppose this weekend it will be crazy out there in those areas...

 No I have only hunted the canals and ponds have not traveled far. I do believe your dog will retrieve without much problem.Not pretty to anyone except you and I. I hunt mainly south of 1-90.West of Dodson road. I have a place to walk that's decent hunting and a good place to start off. You'll have to  pick your shots to be able to retrieve your ducks and game birds. Let me know if interested send me a PM with your email add and we can talk. I'm not a fwd fwd fwd person I well We the guys I hunt with are not joke senders (most of the time) :-) they're a sick bunch both of them ( do not pay any attention to LML)
 I'm really a good person, he's a butt head and will kick you out of bed.Otto will tell ya but Lndshrk is prone to cause trouble.( take back what I said about LNDSHRK) he'll rat my honey holes. Gambling Guy is cool.
 I'm able to leave after the school bus Friday morning.

I had thought about going over to hunt off dodson, we'll have to try it sometime.

 No I didn't do very well but heard a lot of shooting.
 Can give you a big jump on learning the area if you wish.

Good luck over there this weekend, we're going back over to Spokane for the youth whitetail doe hunt, my kid still wants to kill a deer.  We have yet to chase any birds except for the youth weekend.  Scouring the maps trying to find someplace over there to kill a whitetail doe.....

 I haven't seen any pictures of him but I bet (NOT BET
know) he's putting putting on the inches. Was it the year before last he got his first deer. He didn't want to bird hunt because he didn't think he was ready for the recoil
 I'll head over tomorrow afternoon. I don't think my son's going to make it so it'll be just Maggie and I.She hasn't had a lot of experiance but she's picking it up ok. I just have to pick my shots.
 exit 264 head south on Dodson 6 + miles place is on the right /west side of the road between the Winchester and Frenchman hills canals if you need a place to stay. Not much but the price is right. Paper plates,plastic chop sticks,can opener, and microwave.
