As far as I know, the only bear attack in NH at that time (there have been others since) occurred when a trail runner's dog took off after cubs and came back with the sow hot on his tail.  As the guy watched in shock, his dog ran between his legs, the bear opened her jaws and bit his crotch hard running full tilt into him, then proceeded to shake him like a terrier killing a rodent  :yike:.  After, he was able to crawl to a road and flag down help.  Never did hear a detailed report on the damage, but felt sympathy pain  :'( just reading the account.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
