.22 vs .223

so i have been hunting dogs for a little over two years now and i seem to have a problem finding the right optic for my AR 15, i use it as my coyote hunting rifle but finding an optic is near impossible. Because i hunt coyotes mostly in timber its pretty hard to use a regular rifle scope. Also i purchased a "holographic" sight from a gun show and its garbage every time i try to shoot it, the damn sight shuts off after i fire. so im thinking of just swapping to the trusty old .22 because i have faster target acquisition. but will a .22 drop a dog like a .223? What would someone recommend as far as an optic for my .223

First I would still shop for a new scope. Plenty of options out there just got to find the right one for you.
I would look into a low powered leupold MK ar or VX hog.

22LR will not drop most coyotes unless you hit the nervous system. Get a 22 magnum and you will drop a lot more coyotes. We have shot a ton of coyotes and it always surprises me with a 40g hollow point how many drop with a 22 mag.

I was originally using a 3-9x40 nikon Prostaff. but the target acquisition was too slow for thick timber i needed something more open which is the reason i switched to a Holo... I was thinking of buying an old eotech or something to see if it works better.

Leupold VX1 in 1-4 power.  Put on 1x and you have plenty of wide open viewing for close, fast targeting, crank to 4x and you have something for those slightly longer shots.

Blacktailsniper has the answer for you. 

The Leupold VX-1, VX-2(1-4x20mm), Weaver V-3(1-3x20mm) and there are bunch more that will give you huge FOV''s(60-90 feet) that make target acquisition in cover easy.  I use these scopes on my combo guns and drillings and on 1x can even shoot flying birds.   Don't let the small objective scare you off with their low power they still have as large an exit pupal as your eye can use.  If it is light enough to see a coyote coming with your bare eye you should be able to see it in the scope.

These are not just short range scopes either, cranked up to 4x they are for me good for 300+ yards.

 

My longest kill this past season with the rifle barrel was 180 yards, the shortest was 6 feet after I rolled it at 40 yards with the shotgun barrel and it charged straight at me.

This one is pretty accurate also, an honest 300+ yard coyote rifle.



In these pictures I have a Nikon 1.5-4.5x20 on it but have changed to a Leupold 1-4x20.

This is a very nice little red-dot for under $70 bucks (Bushnell Trophy TRS)  I'd put this on your 223.  Carry a spare battery as it is only battery powered (only down side).

No magnification so if you are looking at shots past 100yards, you may want something different.  I find this to be faster than open sights.

Havent logged on in awhile thanks for all the great advice guys really appreciate it ill be doing research on the Leupold as far as bushnell ill probably make that my secondary as i run s 45° mount on my AR15 for a back up optic. .22mag will be my next toy thanks again!!!

If you haven't got a 45 degree mount for iron backups your missing out.... even the inexpensive ones work for those less than 100 yard shots.

Any decent 45 degree sites out there for a good price?  the limited searches I have done have returned results that were priced pretty steep.

I've got a Burris. 1-4 on one of my Ar's, paid 200$for it in Cabela's bargaincave, one of the best optics I've run on an AR. On 1x it's like using a red dot, on 4x it's very clear, and has holdovers for standard 5.56 cartridges, out to 600 yds.

On the same gun I am running a set of 45deg backup irons ipaidless them 20$ for through amazon. They aren't as flashy as the high end stuff, but I've taken em out to 250yds on steel, and have had em 2.5 years now,through 2 different uppers. No reason to spend big line on back up irons if your life ain't on the line.
