Retirement age coming up
« on: August 25, 2017, 06:15:55 PM »
My labs are turning 10 soon, and either this season or next plan on being their last.  This last season it took them a couple days of resting after a hunt to move around, I realize their hearts are there, but the body just cant handle it the way they did years prior.    About to get another puppy and hoping the last full season with my labs will be the first with the new one.  Looking for any pointers, great stories or pics of your guys handing the reigns over to the next generation of pups.

My Griffin is 8 years old and has slowed down noticeably.  I don't know how many more seasons he will have, he has arthritis in the hips so is pretty sore after running.  I got him the day I had to put down my Spinone, had hoped the two would have hunted together.  Good luck to you on getting a new pup.

My lab Maggie is turning 10 this fall & ready for retiring, too. I have some health issues, so I'm not getting another dog soon. I'll miss having a partner next year

Kind of a side bar but you might ask your vet about Rimadyl as a anti iflamitory and Gabapentin for pain. Has helped a lot with my older dog although she's not a hunter.

Our 11 year old Border Collie has had a gimpy hip for a few years now. We were lucky and have an "honest" veterinarian who told us to try glucosamine and chondroitin, but do not buy the ones for dogs they are way over priced. Buy the generic brand for people. This has made a huge difference in how fast she recovers from activity, and if she limps at all.
Do not bother with the snacks or chews that have glucosamine and chondroitin in them, He said there is not enough to make any difference at all.
This has made a dramatic difference.

Good call Colin. I'd say to research up on meds that will help with joint pain, as that will help with the last hunting season as well as the day to day movements...

Found a dog to pick up this sunday.  He is 12 weeks old and a yellow lab.  After my deer hunt will grab him and bring the dog over to meet mine.  Not to worried about the dogs, more about my chickens that I have :chuckle:  My labs are great with chickens
