Rifle decisions
« on: August 26, 2017, 09:31:41 AM »
After having my Remington built I have been trying to figure out my next build. I have a good old ruger m77 chamber in 30-06. It's an all factory rifle and I really like it. It shoots like you typical m77, about 1 to 1.25 at 100 yards.
Here is my problem. I want to give a 6.5 creedmoor at try. I have considered putting a new barrel and stock on the ruger and having a trigger job done. Then again I could get rid of the ruger to fund a new build on a new Remington action. I am not really into buying factory 6.5 creedmoor rifle because I don't get want I want.
So my two options I have narrowed it to:
1: Ruger m77
24 inch bartlien barrel chamber in 6.5
Boyd's prairie hunter stock
Trigger job by smith
Action squared and bedded

2: Remington 700 short action blueprinted
Timney 517 trigger
24 inch #3 bartlien barrel chamber in 6.5 creedmoor
Grayboe outlander stock
Bed the action
Ptg bottom metal
What would you guys do?

I'd look at the Browning X-bolt Hells Canyon 6.5 creedmoor for $1000 and then decide if I want to still go custom or put money $ into better optics ?  If I wanted to build I would go on a Remington base.

I looked at that rifle really hard. Seem like a killer rifle. The m77 would be the cheapest route to build but hate there is no aftermarket for them.

For me, if these were my two options, it would be a VERY easy choice and I'd build a semi custom off the Rem 700.  If you don't already have a donor Rem 700 to build off of you can go a couple different routes.  I always watch for Remington ADL Varmint 700's to go on sail at Cabelas.  Last Christmas I bought two in 22-250 that were on sale for 399.  New take off barrels sell pretty easy and fast, I got a little over a hundred bucks each for the two I sold which brought my price for the action and trigger down to under 300.  Or, you can just purchase a SA Rem 700 action w/trigger for around 340.

This is what I just did with my 300 win mag I built. Grabagun.com has the Remington action for I think 350. Was just curious on what people thought about building the m77.

I really like Rugers, but I don't think I'd spend the money building on a tang safety M77 if I wanted a precision gun. There just isn't a lot out there for aftermarket support. I do love the M77 Hawkeye actions though for hunting guns.

I think you'd be happier in the end if you built off of the Rem 700. You'll have more trigger and stock options which will save you money in the long run compared to building off of the Ruger.

I like Ruger guns, but if it's for something to build, it's hard to beat the 700. It's good quality to start with & there's lots of market support out there.
