25-06 and blacktail
« on: October 17, 2017, 10:40:00 AM »
Having to go to my back up tikka t3 in 25-06. I plan on hunting blacktail with it. What grain bullet do you reccomend, in the past for mule deer I shot 117 sst's. thanks for the help! Or would you go with a 30-30?

:) shoot what ever you shoot, 25/06 gives you more options on shot. 30/30 aint no good at the 350 yard clear cut shot :) or when all you can see is part of the head at 100 yards

25-06 is a great blacktail round.   Most 100-120gr bullets work fine on blacktail.   Shoot what your rifle is accurate with.

My buddy has done well with CoreLokt ammo in his 25-06 on blacktails for 30 years.  I preferred Nosler 110gr Accubond.  But the Federal ammo is half the price of the Nosler (and even less than CoreLokt), and should work just fine.   Federal manufactures some good variety of 25-06 ammo with Speer, Sierra, Nosler, etc. bullet options.   And Hornady has their lower cost Whitetail brand as well in 117 interlock SP that should get the job done.

I've always liked federal blue box for deer, EXCEPT with small, fast cartridges. Then I choose a bonded bullet to make sure it'll hold up if I take a close shot.

Any good round will get it done but as said above try different ammo to see if your rifle is finicky, I have found it to be a one shot cartridge if you put the slug in the right place. Flat shooting and underrated cartridge in my opinion!
