Late Archery in GMU 204
« on: November 08, 2017, 11:49:16 AM »
(I posted this in the Bow Hunting section as well but thought I may get more insight in this forum) I have the opportunity to hunt GMU 204 for late archery whitetails (general season). Has anyone hunted this season? And what should I expect? Should I be focused up in the heavy timber, or down in the valley floor? I have permission to be down in the fields but I don't want to waste my time if not necessary. Any info would be much appreciated.

I've got property in 204. I'm at an elevation of 3,500 to 4,000 feet. Never had a lot of activity and my 40 acres is about 75% timber with scattered open meadows. I would think the activity is happening down in the lower elevations but that's just my experience.  It was also in negative temps for the greater part of the day through the week just after Thanksgiving. Hope you find success.

I also have property in the 204 GMU and for the 1st time in 10 years I did NOT fill my tag.(Modern) Reports have it there was a high rate of mortality last year due to wet conditions in spring. On our land the deer numbers were wayyyyyy down.
Ive sat in a tree stand at -12  2 years ago and let me tell ya....it aint no fun LOL but deer activity was good at 3500 ft. Look for any source of food and cover. Take some time and scout your options, The bucks should be high in the rut.  I think timber and some rattling might be the ticket. Good Luck
