Idaho non-resident capped elk tags
« on: November 30, 2017, 07:57:13 PM »
I am just wondering how many of you have purchased these tags in the past, what you experience was and if you would purchase these types of tags again since they are a first come first serve?

My wife and I are mainly looking to spend some quality time elk hunting in 2018 because we haven't really had the time since my first kid was born over 4 years ago (the last year I had elk in the freezer).  We had a good streak of putting elk in the freezer and I miss chasing elk around the woods.  Washington elk hunting isn't in my plans unless I finally burn my quality bull points, but we also have a few points in Colorado and Wyoming, so I am toying with cashing in points there as well.

I am a novice when it comes to Idaho and we have only hunted deer and moose there.  We toyed with the idea of elk hunting on these tags last year even though these areas would all be new to us. If I buy one of the capped tags, we will still put in for limited draws in Idaho later in the year and trade up (if they allow that) if either of us are drawn.

Really, I am just wondering what the other veteran Idaho hunters experiences are with these tags and if these are a good starting point for a Washington elk hunter.  Any advice would be great and feel free to PM me if you dont feel like discussing on the open forum.

Thanks,

We were successful last year in Idaho(Cow tag Controlled Hunt & Antlered Tag, this year in Washington(Cow tags).  My opinion is more land, less people in Idaho. We will use Washington for special hunts/draws.

2018 Idaho permits on sale as of today. :hello:

If you scout you will find more sign in washington / oregon then many places in Idaho.  But because of the two month season hunters are spread out more in Idaho which is nice.   If you really learn an area you will have a better chance there where ever it is.  I like Idaho due to no hoof rot like western wa.

Has anyone ever hunted the Selway A or Middle Fork A tags? I'm new to Idaho elk hunting, so I'm just trying to at least start with tag that I have a decent shot at filling. I'm a meat hunter when it comes to elk, so I'm looking more for the opportunity to harvest versus the quality.

Rifle hunt? How would you be hunting them like miles per day and elevation gain, what’s realistic for your party?
