Help savage build

Alright you guys your advice helped me decide that I did not néed a muzzle break on my heavy barreled savage stagger feed build . Last night I picked up one ugly ass mcmillan stock with all the green camo on it figured for 350 bucks it wasn't too much more then an hs or a hogue aluminum bed stock. Gonna be shooting long range non living thinks wit this rifle. So should I put a cheek riser on this baby? Looking at mounting a high power scope 10-50 8-32 or maybe a fixed power scope. This is for practice and learning and I'm kinda new to shooting past 300. I do reload and have been shooting a savage lrh 6.5x284 for 2 years longest shot has been 476 yds on my high hunt muley this year . Thanks guys any help appreciated.

You need a cheek rider to adjust for cheek weld.  With a big 50mm scope on it you’ll probably need it but you won’t know for sure till you have it all put together.

My long range hunter has one and I have the mil/mil vortex pst on it and even with my big head it seems to help get me aligned when on higher powers. Is it hard to install a riser and do I risk damaging the stock?

It depends on which of the style riser you choose. 

Some are simple, slip-on while others require drilling through the stock for adjustment/attachment bolts.

Best thing is get it put together and see if you need one first.

I have contemplated this with my 28 Nosler. I could drop a ring size and save~1/8” in rise but feel I should put a riser pad for optimum shooting form. I shoot I sub MOA now but think the pad will help improve. I would need it removable for cleaning though because the comb is already at bore level.

You really need to check the fit of the stock before you start doing anything else.

Like said above. See how it fits with the scope mounted up. While it’s possible to shoot really accurate with out a great cheek weld I find that it helps a ton to have a proper cheek weld in seeing your shots through recoil.

To get a good cheek weld even with straight tube scopes I need to raise the comb.  I use inexpensive butt bags, they have a foam insert.  If I need to go higher I cut extra pads from neoprene waders.

Little Sako that I like with butt bag with insert to raise comb because any lower rings the bolt hits the scope.
