Hey Jackalope, Coach and other car experts about lift kits

  What do you think about lift kits on 4X4's? Do they cause more/earlier wear? Are small lift kits (2-4inch) and medium tires, different than a 6 inch lift and Huge tires?  Or is a guy better off to just leave it stock? Opinions please. I am not sure why it would matter but a Toyota 4Runner.

driving causes wear, don't be scared. I've had a 2" level and 34.5" tires on my f150 for 65k  miles (has 81k now) and all the forums preach your ball joints will wear out quicker and it'll wear your cv joints in the axle shafts.  my jeep comanche has between 6-7" of lift. my dad's 2005 ram has had a 4" lift nd 35s since new, about 130k on it.  the bigger the lift, the bigger tires you'll want. at some point you'll have to regear to save the tranny and boost performance back to near stock. if your asking I'm betting it'll be a mall crawler and see no offroad where a lift and tires can sometimes help

Not all lift kits are created equal either. How much are you wanting to lift your 4Runner? I couldn’t stand the stock stance, so I installed a 3/1 leveling kit on my Tundra.

2" Leveling kit on 2015 Ram 1500.  Been running wheel spacers for chains for last 6 months.  90k miles no problems.  Lifts done right only are no issues other than reduced mileage which can be significant with the larger tires and wind resistance.

A lot of the where can come from the wrong off set on wheels and huge tires, if you find a good compromise on offset to clear your UCA and a tire that is not to wide and heavy your fuel milage, rubbing, and where can be minimized. Look at Toytec lifts for yota's, great options!

I’ll add another leveling kit to that mix. I’ve had my 2014 Ram Cummins leveled with 35’s for 90k. Been a good rig.

thanks, I saw a 4runner like mine with about 2-3 inch rear and 3-4 in front. so it was level. I intend to keep stock size tires, or very close, but get more aggressive tread, if I do this. I found a kit with shocks, springs,  and these upper bars that do something. Highly recommended. Kings, I think. The runner I saw looked pretty darn good. What is a good place to get work like this done?

A lot of times the Kings will come with new upper control arms, so that’s probably what you are talking about.

I installed mine myself and then had Andy’s Off-Road in Lacey do my alignment. Most shops won’t instal kits that you don’t buy from them.

I went with leveling kit on my truck and few sizes larger tire and aggressive tread. No problems here. To big a lift on an already big truck means im not getting no where.

The more unsprung wight you add ...ie tires and wheels the more wear your gonna have in the front suspension and steering componants. Level kits are ok but remember that by raising the rear you take caster out of the front end . Always have a good allignment shop check the caster swing . Gaurantted, if you change tore size you. Will effect gear ratio . This can be hard on a transmission . Gear changes will correct it but are costly

This is for a 2017 4 runner TRD   I guessed at your vehicle so you might need to change it a little but I bet they fit
